    Re: Tone Dexter users?

Why is this not offered as a plugin? The ability to set it up once, and from then on be able to record your piezo pickup (free of worry about background noises) and render the file as though you'd...

Re: Gibson EM-1235 with TWO MANDOLIN NECKS

Most likely because I'm in the UAE, with these calculations being computer-generated – the shipping (to me) alone is $4,995!

I'd love to know who "custom ordered" it. :)

    Re: Blue Chips

When I first met my Chilean wife-to-be (at an Irish session she was running in Santiago), I showed her the Blue Chip pick I was using, and told her about it. "Why ees Blue Cheep?? Ees not blue, ees...

    Re: Compressor?

I'll point out that the only reason I use compression (live) is because the pickup (on my go-to live/amplified mando, a Rigel R-100) seems to exaggerate the dynamics when compared to how it sounds...

    Re: Blue Chips

Had to buy a spare in case I drop one during a show.
Had to buy another in case I lost one ('cuz, always have to have a spare).
Had to keep 'em with the mandolin, so, three for each...
  7. Re: Any recommendation on octave pedal to simulate a bass guitar?

The Electro Harmonix Micro POG tracks really well, but it's only one octave either way.

The bigger models might go two octaves (I haven't tried 'em so I don't know, but I haven't tried running a...

    Re: Pinky independence

    Along Jeff's lines...

My piano teacher pointed out that she'd seen a program where someone's brain had been exposed and stimulated with electrical currents, and that the thumb responded...

    Re: Pinky independence

The Dancla All Strings video (the first one at https://mandoscales.com/the-videos/) gives your pinky a good workout, with the added angle of being logical simply because it makes more sense to use...

    Re: Revelation Mandocaster Pickups

Yep – it's the one pictured on John's website (http://www.knutsonluthiery.com/mandolins/marshall.html).
It came with Alembic pickups – the E-string was non-existent. Steve put in a pair of...

    Re: Revelation Mandocaster Pickups

You're in the US – Steve Ryder, in Maine, makes excellent-sounding pickups.

(I recently replaced a pair of Steve's humbuckers (which sounded amazing) with a pair of his stacked humbuckers (which...

Re: EM-150 CL. Pretty fair deal. NFI.

I had one of those, and $350's what I paid for it, back in the day.

It wasn't easy to play, and I snapped the truss rod trying to easify it. Took it to a guitar show, the first guy I ran into...

Re: Advice sought about 1917 Gibson H1 Mandola

I toured for a couple of years, hitting sessions as I went, with a 1921 H2, and not that you're collecting votes, or even asking the question, but ya, a fourth vote for CGDA tuning for IT (a fifth...
  15. Re: Irish trad musicians that use Blue Chip TAD 40 pick

I can't actually say that I prefer the speed bevel because I haven't tried any non-beveled Blue Chip picks. :)

That said, I use the beveled TAD 40 (and sometimes 35) for electric, but the 50 for...
  16. Re: Favorite Electric Mandolin Albums or Artists?

I won't do the research right now (it's bedtime here in Dubai), but the music as the final credits roll in a western that stars Brad Pitt is definitely (to my ears, at least) a bone-dry Fender...
  17. Re: Favorite Electric Mandolin Albums or Artists?

I like this key for this tune – it's the lowest (unless you have a 5-string) that you can play McCoy Tyner's left-hand accompaniment.

    Re: Position playing or shifting?

A strong pinky and accurate shifting are both desirable skills worth acquiring. If playing a lick one way makes as much sense as playing it the other way, the obvious-to-me strategy is to practice it...

    Re: Country and Blues

I've been taking electric mandos to open mic-style blues jams for decades. I could give lots of un-asked-for advice about jam logistics, but about blues, there's this:

Most if not all of the...

Re: Happy Birthday - Raffaele Calace

Not that it's in anyone's neck of the woods, but the Mandolin Museum in Nagoya Japan had some amazing recordings.

  25. Re: Practicing with Headphones on an Electric Mandolin

I do own and use when necessary the Vox built-in-to-the-headphones-themselves headphone amp, but it's my last resort, given my other available options (Amplitude on my laptop, and an Avid 11R rack...
