    Re: octave mandolins

Eastman is bright, TC is darker, both play reasonably well, bridge on the TC is compensated for lighter strings (PS on top two courses), I got mine to sound pretty good.

For me OM's were a gateway...

    Re: Mandolin vs. Mandola?

I play both, I started on mandolin though.

Mandola fits certain needs I guess, it gets down near guitar range, fun and useful to have around for certain things, I would never want just one or the...
  4. Re: I put new strings on and positioned the bridge myself

I think others already covered it, but congrats on doing that. I remember my first time, playing with a tuner and getting my intonation up the neck right, I own more accurate tuners now, but the...
  5. My adventures in tenor guitar, transposing finally works

Been a while since I did a substantive post, so I though I would post my adventures playing mandola/tenor guitar over the last six months.

I got into this whole mandolin thing 5 years ago so I...

Re: Eastwood Airline solid electric mandola

I've been down this road, here is what I do, I only use four strings, and like to bend and use vibrato, basically they are electric guitar-like things.

I have two of them, one strung as a tenor...

    Re: Alternate Mandolin Tunings

WRT to tensions, you can design a custom string set (using string tension pro) for any tuning you would like.

To me it isn't the tuning, it's the tension that matters for feel. I can design say a...

    Re: Setup/bridge adjustment

Yeah, good setup, lower action, lighter strings, those are the first steps, and enough for most.
I also put on taller frets, since I started on a low-fret instrument, and my hands are old and weak....
  9. Re: Getting started with tenor, looking at an electric tenor

If you want shorter scale, and CGDA, the Eastwood mandola converted to a four stringer is a sweet instrument. For longer scale, a real tenor guitar is the sweet spot.

Re: Six to eight string conversion

That's a lot of work, very nice, projects like that are fun.
  11. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

For me, mandola was a gateway to tenor guitar.

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

Here is the end of the story: bought a new pickup, put it on, clicked the same, sounded worse, put the OEM pickup back on, in lowered position it is ok, the end. :-)

Re: 8 string solid body playability

Eastwood (I own many, but not their 8str mando) seems to favor larger frets, which I like.

    Re: Caterina Lichtenberg‘s On-line course

You mean the artist works one?

    I am a subscriber.

While has some intro material, it pretty much assumes you can read music and have some facility with mandolin already.

    It's strengths...

    Re: Acoustic pedal

My plan is to use it to temporarily get an acoustic tenor guitar sound from my electric, while I wait 7 months for my acoustic to be built.

    Re: Fixing a microphonic pickup

Replaced the cover today, no difference, old cover was not magnetic after all.

Not sure what it is now, pickup is set low so I don't hit it often, maybe that's enough.

    How is a fully potted...
  19. Re: Electronic tuner: guide, or unquestionable authority?

FYI, I only use the tuner for one string in each course, matching them is always by ear. I also use a tuner for 12th fret setup.

I don't like tuners that aren't super-accurate any more, my ears...
  20. Re: Played an EARNEST Junior Deluxe 5-string electric mandolin to

Glad you enjoyed it, maybe lowering the pickup could get it out of the way. I have done that on both of my electrics that came with high pickups.

My debut as a tenor guitar player

Played my electric 4-string (CGDA) in our worship band this morning. Did mostly basic lead-guitar-style stuff, and it wasn't terrible.

I used a PRS Archon Clean amp sim in the HX Stomp to get the...
  22. Re: Electronic tuner: guide, or unquestionable authority?

I got on the super-accurate tuner bandwagon. Now tuning is a matter of how much time I want to spend, I can get close quickly, getting everything dialed in more accurately takes more time, the tuner...

Re: Ordered a custom tenor from Davy Stuart

Well, if you want a 4-string in 5ths in the mandocello range, my usual method is to remove four strings from an 8-string, kinda why I ordered from Davy Stuart. :-)

I brought in a mandostang once, it got called a mini-strat by the band mates.
