  1. Re: Noise with cheap magnetic pickups!

Been there. It's not your mandolin's fault.

I agree about finding the an outlet on a circuit that does not include the lighting. It'll help immensely.
A battery powered amp would be separate...

    Re: Magnetic Pickup Advice

If the acoustic sound of the mandolin is rubbish, you might benefit from a good set-up. The foot of the bridge could be poorly fitted, the intonation could be out a little as well. If you have a...

    Re: Mandobird revisited

Just thought I'd drop a pic.

I'm thinking about asking Etienne van Hove about making a 5 string, 15" scale length version of the mandobird with 2 pickups. Banjo tuners would be de...

    Mandobird revisited

Back when these had been out about a year or two and production was ramping down, some big box retailers were selling Mandobirds on the cheap. The sea foam green and the sparkly gold were not...
  5. Re: Emando players: What do you want in an amp?

    Hi Martin,

Great question! I've been trying amps for what seems like years, and I have come to the conclusion that guitar amps are a compromise for emando players, like socks that are warm and...
  6. Re: NMC Electric Guitar Alternate Tuning Gauges/Tension Question

Watch this Premier guitar rig rundown.

It's Robert Fripp's guitar tech talking about his set up. Fripp tunes to something he calls New Standard. It's basically a 5 string mandocello tuning with...

    Re: Mandolins in the works

I've been looking at the bench photo again... (bad idea for me!)

The mahogany LP at the back... What scale length is that? Looks a bit longer than usual, which piques my interest. :)

  8. Re: Good idea / Bad idea ?? Suede back

Waylon Jennings covered his Tele in tooled leather. I always thought it looked pretty cool. I doubt it has any measurable effect on a Tele.

    Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar

I know Daniel Lanois used one to add scratchy rhytm tracks to either (or both) U2's Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree.
  10. Re: 5 string electric mandolin string info

    I've used D'addario XL's and Ernie Ball Super Slinky's.

    11p 16p, 24w, 42w, and 56w

These go on both my 14.25" JBovier EMC5 and my 15" Arrow G5. I have to say the Ernie Ball strings were less...

    Hey Andrew,

Tell us about the yellow one. :)

I like yellow emandos and yellow strats. I have no idea why.

    Re: Six string electric

Back in the late 80s for about 5mins Alvarez made a 9 string guitar. Totally melted my butter. Likewise Martin made (may still be making) a Roger McGuinn model guitar with 7 strings (the 7th being...

A couple years ago I put a set on the mando you made for me. So you can stop worrying about that one. ;)

  17. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

My usual 'mandola' is actually an Arrow G5 hollow body electric 5 string mandolin with a 15" scale length. It solves a lot of stretching/fingering issues.

My 'real' mandola is a Weber Alder #2,...

  19. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

I don't have the mandola tab, no. I do have the guitar tab though. I was thinking about putting it in TEF and then trying to convert it from guitar to mandola.

  20. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

tmsweeney is right about sharing a lot of sonic space with the guitar.

I've been playing along to Eric Skye's "Kathryn by the Delaware" on the mandola. I can match the pitch of his guitar part on...

Re: Us newbies are cracking on ;)

I find the Page 3 shots distracting too. The instruments are porn enough! I could stare at them for hours. Sorely tempted to ask for a 5 string telecaster shape with 15" scale length!

  22. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

Slap a capo on the octave mandolin at the fifth fret and have a go!

The scale will be a bit shorter than the usual 16" or 17" but the fingering will be the same.

Re: In praise of solid body mandolins.

    How about:
    6) 100% more control over your tone. No reliance upon sound engineers who may or may not know what a mandolin is supposed to sound like.
    7) Cool chord inversions available if you use a...

Re: 8 string solid body playability

Frets can be changed, and all mandolins need a set up from time to time. Solid body emandos are no exception. So don't let the need for a set up or even fret size dissuade you from buying a...
