Re: Eastman fiberglass cases still available?

My Eastman Fiberglass case wouldn't accommodate a shorter neck (oval hole in general with a fret neck join at 12 instead of 15).

Re: Better machines give better sustain?

Without good technique (much of sustain derives from technique and set up, right?) adding all that mass just makes unbalanced instruments (I'm looking at you head heavy F5s!) more cumbersome to play....

Looks and sounds nice. It's always nice to see a new builder take off.

I'm not going to bandy about numbers but, look at various neck tie sites. Those are just fabric (a raw material) and sewing time from standard templates. You have wood, paint, stain and backing...

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

I liked the Mittels on several of my instruments but the extra cost of the wound A strings wasn't worth it for similar sound, feel and longevity with the D'Addario Flat Tops.

  8. Re: And now for something completely different...

I used to be cheap on stuff. Like is $x worth it? Well, if I figure I'll wear it a few times a year for a few years the cost per wearing gets pretty low. When I consider no one else will have that...

Yes Dan plays Guitar mostly but open back banjo and mandolin and traded off with others in his band on stage. Look for Dan Zanes and Friends album Rocket Ship Beach - my favorite track on there is...

    Re: Obscure, solid Mandolin Players

I'll add Dan Zanes (formerly with the Del Fuegos). He now does Americana music for kids and has a bunch of albums many that feature him (on a sweet old Gibson A-oval). He used to have concert/dance...

A legend passes. Living outside of Philly, the Chieftains played the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day for several years and filled the Kimmel Music Center's Verizon (Big) Hall. My wife and I got...

    Re: RIP Arthur Stern

I was a fan of Mr. Stern. I always appreciated the time he took here and in private. His love of all things mandolin, glass, his panache, and his awesome Maine Coon Cats. My condolences to those...
  20. Re: Where can I find arrangements of Dowland for mandolin?

Joe Brent and Alon Sariel have an album "John Dowland: An Englishman in New York" you can find Joe on Instagram and FB (I believe). You might get some help from him.

Re: Wegen vs. Primetone vs. Clown Barf

The primetone sounded the crispest to my ears. The Wegen and the Barf were pretty similar. Very subtle nuances. Maybe it's the bevel. I think these may be more interesting in the context of a...

Re: No frills vs fancier mandolins

I think this is a builder by builder question, frankly. I would imagine the builders that carefully carve their plates work them to their potential. Do you get different "better" tone out of more...
