    Re: D'addario String Comparison Video

I've been told that they are discontinuing the EXP's so it is either uncoated or the crisper sounding XT's. The plain strings sounded best to me and to my surprise.
  2. Re: What's the weirdest MUSICAL thing you've ever done?

At a gig, several years ago commemorating a defunct textile mill, that made material for the first moon landing, a woman came to us with a "bluegrass opera", her words for the band to play. It was in...
  3. Re: Canadian folk music moment (no mandolin content)

This story, that appears at the bottom of the linked page, is moving as well.

    Re: Givens A

Years ago, 2002 or 2003 I was in Gruhn's in Nashville. They had all of the master model mandolins but the one I liked best was an F9. It was woody and cut all at once.

    Re: Weber, the best years.

Didn't know they had a bad year. We've got an 03 and a 12 and they both hoss's.

Re: $200 to dress mandolin frets? Ouch!

I got a complete refret job with evo for $150 in WNC. Must be those big city prices.

Re: Advice for newbie in SC

The 5th String in Greenville has lots of new Eastmans and some real fine good used mandolins from time to time.
  9. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

    Hey Cary,

Thought I recognized your name. I was playing a Gerald Anderson A that week I think. I picked up the Girouard this past year. It is a good sounding mandolin but not nearly as good as...
  10. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

My wife plays a Weber Absoroka and all she plays is old time. I have Girouard oval hole that I sometimes use and an Elkhorn F hole A. All sound good playing old time to there old ears. That...

    Re: NMD - Girouard Oval

I was lucky enough to find one locally and it is a dandy. Yours is a bit fancier but I am sure it sounds as good as the one I have so I know why you play it so much. Enjoy!

    Price increase at Eastman or...?

I noticed that the Eastman 305 mandolins are now marked at $510 at several online retailers. Since I teach beginners I like to keep an eye on these things. Was there a price increase at Eastman or...

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

Why did you get rid of the EXP74 strings? My dealer told me they were discontinued. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

    Re: My 'Customized' Eastman MD-315

Mine is one of the first couple of batches we got at the store where I used to teach. It came with a stamped tailpiece. I also upgraded the frets with the equivalent to Martin guitar frets. That and...

    Re: One more banjo question

Overtones abound with an open back banjo. You can use a cheap plastic shopping bag to attenuate them. Shimming the neck with a business card seems odd and antithetical to getting a good sound. The...

  17. Re: How do you test the qualities you're looking for in a Mandoli

Play it, do you hardest stuff and see how it works and sounds.
  18. Re: Curly Seckler and the mandolin? What gives?

Lester and Earl were taking heat from Monroe for playing bluegrass, his music, after leaving his band. Having Curly play mandolin probably exacerbated the lack of love between them. So they played...

Re: Tascam DR-05 vs Zoom H2N

I have an old Zoom and a not quite so old Tascam, they both work fine. I got the Tascam on sale for less than $100 and it is fine.

    Re: What's up with USPS?

I bought some picks from Nashville a 5-1/2 hour drive from here and it took ten days to get here. Yeah they are getting worse. We ordered a mic from a store in North GA 2 hours away and it went to...

    Re: Marty Stuart Mandolin Solo

He plays a beat up old mandolin made by old friend Chris Warner, who also played banjo with Jimmy Martin among others. Yeah I remember that kid playing with Lester and Nashville Grass.

Re: The Sun Jumped Up This Morning

The relative minor is just used to harmonize one of the runs and is not essential. It is Crawdad song as Woody lifted other melodies for his words as par of his MO.
