Re: Man I need a good tuner...

I've been investigating these. The polymode makes no sense when you're dealing with courses, so I'm between the TC Unitune and the Peterson Strobeclip. It was hard to use the D'addario clip because,...

Re: Mike Compton changed my pick grip

As a general rule, I try to do whatever Mike Compton is doing and I'm not. Hasn't failed me yet. :)

    Re: Will Kimble "Trident" Mandolin

Maybe a little nod to John Monteleone there. Will does nice work. Andy Statman once let me play his. Very tight workmanship and even tone as one might expect.

    Re: Fender Tru-Shell picks

I love the three-star comment on Amazon: "This is what you get for drunk shopping. A 7-dollar pick." He's convinced me to try one. I love Red Bears, if this is anything like them I'll be happy.

    Re: electric mandolin strings?

In my experience, you might not want to go too light because you're compromising sound, especially with some of the electrics on the market.

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

I use the D'Addario mini and I'm not happy with it. The Strobo HD appears to be the most accurate, but the Unitune seems easier to zero in on actually tuning. At about half the price, it's probably...

    Thomastik Strings

A few people have recommended Thomastik strings to me recently. I know they're far more expensive than the D'Addario J74s I have always used. In the Cafe, I typically see them used or discussed with...
  12. Re: Maybelle Carter would have been 110 today.

So really, her birthday was yesterday, so she is older than I thought. :)
  13. Re: Maybelle Carter would have been 110 today.

    Born May 9, 1909.
  14. Maybelle Carter would have been 110 today.

No direct mandolin content but worth remembering.

    Re: Argh...

Try out someone's Tube Screamer pedal or something similar that can create the sound in the pre-stage. Of course the only true solution to the speaker is a speaker. Have you tried amps with an...

Re: 4- vs 8-string electric mandos

I bought a cheap Kentucky 300e four-string emando and took one hour to replace the cheap lipstick pickup with a Bill Lawrence set of hotrails, and I couldn't be happier with it. Looking for a better...

Dogs are amazing. A friend has had Shelties for many years. Her description, and this is not uncommon in Shelties, was "The dog lived to please me. It was her life." I lost my trusty Golden Retriever...

    Re: Kentucky KM-150 vs KM-156

Have you considered buying it online? You may find more options within your price range and a reputable dealer should give you time to try it out with a return option. (No financial interest).
  20. Re: Michael Cleveland Tommy Emmanuel. hold on to something

I recently discovered Michael Cleveland's work through his playing with Andy Statman and, man, am I impressed! Probably the cleanest fiddler I've heard in a long time.

  24. Re: Saw this on Wikipedia.org; thought it was funny.

Interesting theory. I don't know if it's true, but it is interesting. My late mother-in-law had a friend named Olive who married John PItt, and so became Olive Pitt. Pick is another story.

    Re: Moses McKinley electric mandolins

I like the purple one a lot. I can't see a pickup on it or tone controls, though I'm sure he's got a pickup somewhere. Very clean looking, perhaps for that reason. Bridge piezo?
