    Re: Pinky independence

"I have been playing this mandolin for a year now".
That's what I tell the people who hear me play. It's less humiliating than telling them how many years I've really been at it.

    Stick with it;...

    Re: Chris Thile's Loars

I think Chris Thile was enthusiastically explaining how L.L. went out of his way to make sure every detail was just right for his own personal F5 mandolin.

The phrase is pretty subjective though....

    Re: Strap recommendations?

Something without buckles, snaps or rivets. Nothing vinyl.

    Re: Kentucky unknown model

    Good plan!

I tried to be truthful about it but didn't want to rain on your parade if you'd already bought it.

    Re: Kentucky unknown model

All I can say is that I've not seen one like that. The tailpiece cover looks to be genuine a Kentucky article, but I don't recognize any other similarities to the Kentucky mandolins I've seen. As far...
  8. Re: Early flatiron mandolin prices rise help?

Hmmm... the OP is "thinking of selling" his Carlson signed 1984 Flatiron. These 1984 Flatirons must be rare birds, the seller in the Classifieds refers to his as a "hen's tooth''.
    And both the OP...
  9. Re: Accompanying a guitarists who tunes down

    Truer words were never spoken.
Hundreds of examples of fine singers recording in oddball keys to suit their range. Jim Reeves comes to mind... 'He'll Have to Go' in C#.

But this is somewhat of a...

Re: Dave Olney rests in peace

I agree with both of you guys. If you have to check out, it would be nice to do it while you're doing what you do and what you enjoy.

On the other hand (and no disrespect intended), as a...
  12. Re: Here's why you are an amazing mandolin picker but still dumb

Well David, I don't believe the results of that study... I don't think so anyway. Lots of big words there and I didn't understand most of them.

Re: What if I bought the wrong instrument?

Don't sweat it. You're in the early stages of discovering that it's not a question of 'either/or'.

    Re: 75 Gibson F-5

No one can know for sure how successful (or unsuccessful) a revoicing would be, even by someone who knows their stuff like Randy Wood. Also... no one can tell you what's best for you.

    If it were...
  16. Re: Accompanying a guitarists who tunes down

There are a few really great pickers that are known for playing their guitars tuned down a half step; Stevie Ray Vaughan comes to mind. No problem there. If you want to play along with any working...

    Re: Classifieds

It sounds like you don't want to open the ad.
You'd rather all the pertinent info be listed in concise printed format so that you don't have to open the ad.

  19. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

Yeah Dolly, we love you. And I explained to the Sirius radio people that my objections to their programming change bear no reflection of my opinion of you or your music. I can only hope that you...

    Re: Natural talent vs practice

I haven't read that book but if your assessment of it is accurate, it sounds like Daniel Coyle may have been short changed when they passed out the gift of common sense.

    Re: The Kentucky

I have a KM-150 that my wife bought me as a birthday present 10 years (?) ago. Still have it; still use it as travel/beater. Great little mandolin.

Also have an older (1980s) Japanese built...
  22. Re: Gibson Ricky Skaggs Distressed Master Model - My New Mandolin

Beautiful instrument! I agree with your opinion about the right amount of distressing. I'd prefer that over the recent ones made to look like 73987. Looks perfect. Congratulations.
  23. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

Thanks for the info. I called. I believe the representative said that she issued a credit to my account (my Urdu is a bit rusty).

Re: Mandolin Orange on today Show

I'm not a big fan of M.O. and what I perceive to be so many 'downer' songs. Sometimes I think Maudlin Orange would be a better name.

That's just me though and my taste. There's no denying those...
