    Re: the Small Dog

Wow! Over $300 for a case cover over a $600+ case! Cost more than some folks’ mandolins.

Re: Lyon & Healy vs Gibson

I don't know for a fact that Marilynn *doesn't* own a Rigel L&H model but the one I know of that she has played for years was built for her by Doug Woodley ( a Canadian luthier who no longer builds)....

Re: Ant. Mossimo bowl back mandolin

Nothing I have in my files or have heard of that name. Post some photos and we can see what it might be related to. Often labels can be retail stores and not the actual maker.

Re: Bacon mandolins - who actually built them?

Nice to resurrect this older thread. As far as who made these my guess is that either Bacon brought someone or a few folks into the factory to tool up and make the few of these we find. Or else they...

Re: What is this amazing-looking instrument?

Hah, Graham... you beat me to it. The only thing I can add is that the tuner are called Preston tuners originally made for 18th century citterns.

The mandolins are a lot rarer than the guitarras....
  6. Re: on Reverb: When a scroll isn't a scroll, or is it?

Those F-holes are positioned low and practically off the edge of the body. Strange.

Re: Ginny and the Teepee by Eoin Duignan

Sounds like either subvocalizing from one of the players on screen or an audience member with indigestion. I assume you are talking about that moaning on the soundtrack?

Re: 1906 Gibson F-4 "tree of life" mandolin

That is approaching a 30s F-5 retail. I think James (above) hit it.

    Here ya go.

Maybe not the very highest of quality...?

    Re: Women with Mandolins

Here’s the video from a Patrick’s post. I thought she would be playing mandolin but she does a nice job on violin on that Bach.

    Re: Mandola or Mandolin?

Measure from the nut to the 12th fret. A mandolin would measure ~6-1/2”-7”. A mandola is longer like ~8”.

What does that label read on the back of the headstock?

Also that upper area of the...
  11. Re: Pickett mandolin

14" viola? That is the size of a violin and would be considered the equivalent of a 3/4 violin, I would guess. You were probably much younger than high school. 15.5" is considered to be on the small...

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

Just Strings is a little confused. Those Liuto strings are for the 5 course mandocello invented and played and composed for by Raffaele Calace not for a lute. You may be correct, Tim, that the top 4...
  13. Re: Plating on a Lyon & Healy Model A tailpiece

Simple and to reiterate simply what rcc56: leave well enough alone! Play your L&H and stop looking at its molecules. :)

    Re: Il Globo mandolin

I don't own that flatback or any of the other bowlbacks. I collect jpegs for reference.

That bar behind the bridge is to stop harmonic vibrations from the section of the strings between the...

    Re: Il Globo mandolin

I have some jpegs in my files of one similar flatback that resembles yours. The seller said (back in 2008) that it was made in Italy. I have quite a few bowlbacks also in my files but those resemble...

    Re: Peavey Composer Series

They are being sold by Peavey. "5 available, 16 sold" I wonder if they are liquidating these or they are still in their line. You never see these in stores.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

The other design flaw of the 144 was the trunk lock. A vice grip on the trunk knob would snap the lock and open the trunk in two seconds. Hey, how did this get to be the Old Car Cafe? Back to the...

    Re: It's an F, it's not an F

Interesting to see the side view of the mandolin. The top, as far as I can tell, looks like it doesn't have an induced arch. I wonder if there is any bracing at all under the top.

All right, enough of this guitar stuff, here is the mandolin version, available for all you fans at Gruhn's.

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

That is great: super rare that it drives upside down.

I had to settle for a 144 when I got a small inheritance. Back then I lived in unhip Brooklyn and that car cost me a fortune every time I...

Re: An evening with the Martin harp mandolin

Here's the obverse of that story, sort of. My older daughter took lessons from early on from a respected school in the next town. Her teachers were all Juilliard students, very well trained and...

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

544! I really wanted a 122 but never had the cash for much. My dad finally gave me his huge 65 Olds Dynamic 88. Still, it got me to where I wanted to go.

    Re: It's an F, it's not an F

Yes, you are correct that it is oval shaped. I actually like the look but am really not sure, other than as a strap hanger, the practical purpose of the horns. I would think a hornless model would be...
