    Re: Newbie needs equipment advice

Agree 100%. Dollar fir dollar, your going to farther ahead with an Eastman or Kentucky over the MK.

Re: Why do you like the picks you like?

I use Dunlop Ultex (Rhino) or Tortex 1.14 mm because they are cheap, available, and sound good. I sand or otherwise scuff them up for better grip.

    Re: Repair question

How did it crack? Was it an impact break or under humidified? Just curious.
  4. Re: Looking for Mandolin Recommendations that hold their value

I think I would want to know a builders track record before I bought #1 from him or her. It may turn out to be a fantastic instrument, but guitars and mandolins are very different. I’d want to see a...
  5. Re: The Hollies - Look Through Any Window

I always liked the Hollies. Graham Nash could have been a bluegrass singer with that high tenor of his.

And the robot tuners were ridiculously expensive.

Re: the Loar VS Eastman VS Kentucky

I’ve always been partial to Kentucky. I like their tone and volume. I’ve owned at least four, and they’ve all been consistently good. Ive owned a couple Eastmans. They were ok, but the tone is...

Re: Ellis, Pava, or Collings MT2

If it were me, without playing any of them, I would be leaning toward the Ellis or the MT2.
  11. Re: New mandolin, is there something wrong with the nut?

I had a km900 that had a fossilized walrus ivory nut. It had all kinds of imperfections like that. It looked like a fossil. I thought it was very interesting, and it sounded good.
  12. Re: Underwhelmed by Northfield Archtop Octave Mandolin

I played one at Elderly a couple months ago and I thought it sounded fantastic. They also had a Pono at that time. I thought it sounded very good, but not as good as the Northfield.
  13. Re: $25,000 Gibson on FaceBook Marketplace

As Mike Wolfe would say, “I don’t want to buy the memories, I just want to buy the mandolin.”

Re: Noob looking for a little direction.

I recently got a km500e mandolin from The Mandolin Store. This little gem punches way above its weight. I think you would be happy with the kn756. I have no experience with older 1980s Kentucky...

    Re: "Playability"

A great sounding mandolin that has bad playability can be fixed, but a great playing mandolin that sounds bad is always going to sound bad.

Re: Thinking of buying a second mandolin

It’s ok to want an F-style. We’re just saying that it’s going to cost twice as much to get the same level of build quality and tone as a an A-style. Also, when you get one, you’re not going to play...

Anybody remember the movie Torah, Torah, Torah, back in the sixties? I watched it and I was torrefied—I mean, terrified.

    Re: best mandolin for 700.00

A couple months ago I bought a Kentucky km500e from The Mandolin Store. It was on sale and well below $700. It is a fabulous mando, couldn’t be happier with it, and the setup was spot on.
  20. Re: Grand daughter is a Lefty - Help needed converting RH to LH

You said that she’s four years old. Has she played any other instruments like guitar or violin? If she hasn’t had any formal lessons, it really doesn’t matter. It’s kind of arbitrary anyway. I...

Re: Iwamoto F5 mandolin #118 in progress

I’ve seen and played a F5 style mandolin with “Takeshi” on the headstock, but never Iwamoto. It was at Elderly Instruments, and it’s been a while, maybe two or three years ago. Unfortunately I can’t...

    Re: Going to California

Nice. Very nice. In a former band, a mando and guitar duo, I used to play this with my guitarist partner.
