    Re: Building an electric tenor...

I decided to have a go at building some. I have two in process right now. Anxious to see how they come out. I can run a Tele body and neck for you on my CNC and you can do the remaining work.

Any trophy store that has a laser. Ask them to use plastic backed abalone or MOP. They can cut the pocket with the laser as well as the inlay. Here is an example and you can see the fine detail...

    Re: Fiebing's Leather Dye

I use the Leather Dye, not the Suede Dye. I spray my bursts. Typically, I rub a straight coat of yellow on followed by a coat of shellac then I mix dye and lacquer to spray the burst. If I mess up...

    Re: DePaule Nouveau inlay advice

I turn photos in to black and white jpegs, import in to inkscape, trace it using the bitmap trace feature, save it as svg then import it in to a CAD program. I can print right out of inkscape for a...

Re: Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

I'm curious to hear what the resistance is on the pickup. I can't believe that Lollar would under wrap a pickup. I've known several people to install them with great results.

Re: Some Questions on New Purchase

I've seen that scale length described as a baritone mandolin. I don't know if that helps but I believe that some stores will sell a set of strings under that moniker.

Re: Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

This must be your first electric. I've never known an electric player not make changes to their instrument. They always seem to be chasing some new sound. :)

I use the MG-4HB from Almuse on all...

Re: Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

The pickup is adjustable but the pole pieces aren't. Put an Almuse pickup on it and wire in a coil tap and you'll be good to go.

    Re: Electric solid body OM

I'd start with deciding on a scale. I've built primarily 21.5" scale OM's although there have been a few 23" scale instruments along the way too. Most of my customers want single course not double....
  11. Re: Building a tune-o-matic bridge for acoustic mandolins?

That bridge is made by slotting a solid saddle perpendicular with a fret saw and pressing in short frets.
  12. Re: Building a tune-o-matic bridge for acoustic mandolins?

I build them from brass and wood and getting ready to build a batch for some tenor guitars that I'm currently building. Four or five string can fit on a bridge base or on a set of studs. However,...

Re: Electric Octave Mandolin. 4 vs 8

It depends on what you consider better sound. Different players use different tools for different applications. You will also see different scales advertised for OM's. The most common are 21.5" and...

A friend of mine sells Martin and Bourgeois their torrified tops among many others. I echoed the same doubts about it that I've heard from others. He told me about how he did a lot of R&D to get it...

Re: Mandobird pickup upgrade success, mostly.

One of the reason the bass pickups aren't so good, other then them not being voiced for a mandolin, is that the rails inside of them are offset because they are designed to be used in pairs and to...

Nickel plating is nickel plating. The satin comes from the clear coat and not the plating. Clean it, buff it then clear coat it with a rattle can lacquer of your desirable finish. I plate a lot of...
