    Re: Favourite effects for electrics.

I'm with you. I didn't know anything about or use any pedals for years. Then I met a fellow who wanted to start a pedal company and I got a crash-course in all things pedals.

    There are basically 3...

Re: Tiny Moore electric 5-string lesson

Fanned frets are a way to provide different length strings on a single instrument. I know this is a guitar, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

    Re: Electric mandolin

You're getting into a "project" that is going to take time researching pickups, electronics and the sort then playing around to find the tonal sweet spot. Either you do it or you pay a tech. Beyond...

    Re: Eastman El Rey?

Godin has a different build and uses RMC piezo saddles and preamp, which are prolly the best of the best for piezo.

El Rey is a rock machine to my eye. It's built more like an ES-335 than a...
  7. Re: A quick and inexpensive way to try the tenor guitar

I just took a closer look and you're right, it's laminate.
  8. Re: A quick and inexpensive way to try the tenor guitar

Appears to be a pretty good deal. I would guess it started life as a baritone uke based on the seller, but that's no different than the Kala.

It does have an adjustable truss rod and what looks to...

    Re: Favourite effects for electrics.

I run my Fender 5 through my electric guitar rig which is really 2 rigs - a clean (Takt) and a dirty (V8).

I use a Radial Bigshot to switch between the 2. Everything meets at a Pigtronix Infinity...

Re: Tiny Moore electric 5-string lesson

You need to try fanned frets to know if they are for you. I found them difficult to play on a 5th tuned instrument because of where the notes sit but YMMV.

    Re: Eastman El Rey?

Not sure the El Rey has a "real" mandolin sound as it uses a modified guitar humbucker for a pickup and is limited to what it can put out.

Regular guitar amps are EQ'd to enhance a guitar's...

Modified dog leash from a dollar store. Works great!
  14. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I used to respect Godin. Bought several instruments of theirs over the years - expensive ones at that. Then I had a first hand experience with them and have since put them on my "don't buy list."

IIRC Kalamazoos are pressed into an arch like Harmonys whereas Gibsons are carved solid tops.

I've found I need 3 pickups to get a good amplified tone out of my mando. I have 2 piezos mounted under the soundboard (like K&K), and a Lace sensor (single coil magnetic) at the end of the...

Re: Added a new Loar to my collection

You're welcome neica. You'll probably have to do some setup to get it to really sing. Sanding the bridge feet so they fit to the top really helps transmit as much string vibration to top as possible....

    Happy New Guitar Day!

I have an LH-300-VS that I love. Yours should be the same guitar with a cutaway and pickup. It's billed as "a replica of original archtop acoustic guitars from the 1920's. It...

    Re: New Eastwood/Airline tenor coming

Sure - my point was that by using off-the-shelf parts it is easier to upgrade the instrument. Whether you consider the machines worthy of consideration is up to you.

    Re: New Eastwood/Airline tenor coming

Tuners are technically tuning machines (Deep Purple's "Machine Head" album is a ref to the "tuners" on the bass headstock on the album cover).

    Re: New Eastwood/Airline tenor coming

While I did find Eastman's use of 6-string hardware on their tenors a bit off-putting at first, there are advantages. 6-string bits - like pickups and machines - makes upgrading much simpler;...

Re: Anyone seen an Eastman El Rey?

The mandolin is named after the El Rey electric guitar Eastman has been selling for quite a while; the mandolin is a small version of that body shape.
