Re: Keeping up with the Fiddlers

Here's my .02. Play a tune you know with your left hand not pressing hard enough to get clear notes. You'll soon find out how little pressure it takes to get a clean note as you'll find some notes...

    W. Eugene Smith: The Jazz Loft

I went to a talk W. Eugene Smith gave in Louisville KY on his documentary photo work of the effects of industrial pollution in Japan just before he died. I had no idea of his connection to the jazz...

JT's Pix Blue Celcon Pick Review

I've used the BlueChip CT55 for many years. Lately, it just seems like too much pick to push through the strings. I started experimenting with a bunch of thinner picks closer to 1mm in thickness.

Re: Once Upon a Stormy Morning

Really fine composing and playing on these tunes, Tim. I really enjoyed the mandocello playing. Very cool album!

Re: Finally, a Lyon & Healy Set

Man oh man. What a beautiful quartet! I hope you have some friends who can play those with you, or you can do some multitracking with you playing them. I'd love to hear them playing together.
  6. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

Shaun's Heiden is the only mandolin I'd trade my Heiden for.
  7. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

Reischman's Loar & Compton's Gilchrist F5 stick out in my mind as the best 2 mandolins I've played. My Heiden A5 is the best mandolin I've owned.

    Re: Gibson's 1923 F-5 Master Model Reissue

I'd save a lot of $ and buy a Hogan F5 and get an accurate copy of a Loar F5. If I did buy one, I'd dig the name out of the headstock with a pocket knife just for their constant lawsuit threat...

    Re: Demonstrating a mandolin

Here's what I do when I make a video to sell a mando: open strings, open chords, a slow doublestop harmonized scale on each pair of strings, a tune that uses all the strings--not played too fast, a...

  18. Re: mic comparison: Neumann KM84 vs. Line Audio CM4

Thanks for the video comparison. The Line Audio CM4 compares very favorably to the vintage KM84. I hear just a tiny bit of difference--maybe a tiny bit thicker/richer tone of the KM84 which I would...

Re: Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon mic (video)

I got my Line Audio mics through JP Gerard at No Hype Audio. JP also builds some highly rated ribbon mics, but I've never heard or seen one in person. I have heard some mandolin tracks recorded with...

Re: Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon mic (video)

If you're looking for a SDC with a flat response like the KM84, it's hard to beat the Line Audio CM4 mics. They are a little tough to get, but very inexpensive for the quality. They don't have the...

    Re: Action!

The bridge is all the way down, so if the action is high, you'll need to do some sanding on the bridge to get the action right. Proceed with caution.

    Re: Yet Another CF Mandolin?

It's just unclear to me from the video if the overload is on the mic, or if the carbon fiber top gets overdriven on the low end. I prefer clarity to woof on the low end, and I presume you do too...
  24. Re: Stringjoy Foxwood mandolin strings first impressions.

The Foxwood strings I put on Dec 17 came off last night. They weren't holding tune as well and the wound strings were a little thuddy. I have some XS strings here, so they went back on. I will...
