    Re: Upright Electric Bass Build

This might provide some ideas for you to use. It's an EUB that I designed and built several years back.

    Re: Which portable amp?

If you haven't settled on a portable amp, another recommendation to try out a Roland Cube EX. This amp is a big step up from the Street Cube, I've had both and the Cube EX is a great battery...

    Re: Portable reverb ideas

Move up to a Roland Cube EX. I'd bet that will take care of your problematic OM. If you're gigging out then pick up a Gator mini stand for it at the same time.

Re: Home Recording - best bang for buck

I always recommend a two stage process for recording.

    1. Something like a Zoom R series to capture audio, and:

    2. Import the tracks to a PC, use a DAW for editing / mixdown, adding effects,...

    Re: Electric solid body OM

I have a "Converting a Mini-Strat to Electric Octave Mandolin" article featured on the EMando.com website:

  6. Re: TurboPlane, Safe-T-Planer - Powering through plate carving

I'm the poster boy for the use of the Safe-T-Planer (and now it's off-shore descendants), using it for everything from surfacing rough lumber from my sawyer to finish planing cuts to level fret...
  7. Re: What's the ideal scale length and string choice for octave?

Thanks to all for the replies so far. I'm still mulling over the thoughts and ideas for a build that I'll do this summer. I'm not sure if I'll end up doing a smaller archtop guitar style octave or...
  8. Re: What's the ideal scale length and string choice for octave?

    I appreciate the long answer!!!

I'm just working on an evaluation of what others prefer and their reasoning. I'm comfortable with up the neck stuff, but I do tend to stay lower due to my...
  9. Re: What's the ideal scale length and string choice for octave?

Hi Jim, Thanks for the kind words.

I'm not sure it's all that common, but I just happened to check Reverb.com and there was a GS Mini neck someone had listed for $50. I couldn't build a neck for...
  10. Re: What's the ideal scale length and string choice for octave?

Thanks for the replies so far, that's exactly the kind of information I'm looking for.

I'm 65 years old, 5'9" with big paws. I've been playing guitar, electric and upright bass, banjo, mandolin,...
  11. What's the ideal scale length and string choice for octave?

I've done a couple of octave conversions, and this is my favorite, using a Kay arch top body and a Taylor GS MIni neck (23-1/2" scale length) using .011", .022", .034"w, and .044"w strings.

    I do...

    Re: Electric Octave Mandolin Neck

I wrote this "how to" article posted on the Emando.com website detailing the conversion of a mini-strat to an electric octave mandolin. You could use the same techniques on many different...

    Re: Mute Pedal Switch?

    THIS.

It works for everything, makes no noise, you can use it for raising your volume a bit for solos if needed.

Alternatively, if you happen to use a multi-effects pedal you can set up one of...

    Re: Italian music, getting started

I can highly recommend watching the Soda Rock Ramblers playing O Detto al Sole, a Matteo Casserino cover. True to the original and shows how dynamic and beautiful this music can be:

    Re: dust bunnies

    Ditto.

You can pour in a half pound of white rice and shake it around to clean up an instrument with dirt problems.

Shake it out carefully and you'll have a clean mandolin.

    Re: Baritone ukulele conversion

You might find my $30 Baritone Uke conversion interesting. I added 4 tuners and used low tuning to make it a true nylon strung double course mandolin.

Very similar to the Holy Galahad. I also looked at the Kutzall and decided to go with the Holey Galahad because of the unique ability to actually see the material as it's being worked. I think I...

    Re: 24" scale length

    Most definitely.

My octave was made by modifying a Taylor GS Mini (23-1/2" scale) neck (someone had the "neck only" on Reverb) and attaching to a 40's Kay arch top guitar body. The tone is great...

    Re: 24" scale length

I have a 23-1/2" scale octave on which I use .011", .022", .034", and .044". strings. I picked the guages to be easy multiples of 11 so they would be easy to remember, although I had to bump the D...
