Re: What mandolins are made in North America?

Godin A8's and Seagull's are good quality, inexpensive (under $1,000) mandolins made by the Godin company of Quebec. There's been lots of discussion of them here. Google the name of the instrument...

Re: Free stuff for Celtic mandolin Learners

That's puzzling, as the Shetland Islands were never a Gaelic-speaking region. Perhaps your grandmother moved to the Shetlands from another area, or perhaps she was speaking in Shetland dialect....

    Re: Big Sciota

Thanks, Steve. That sounds like a close relative of the Scottish (and Canadian) standard "The Flowers of Edinburgh":

Re: Leaning Toward Old Time Fiddle Tunes

I'm not getting nationalistic here, just commenting on the fact that the choices would fit just fine in a a Canadian old time jam. Still, I get your point that they are "not strictly considered OT...

Re: Leaning Toward Old Time Fiddle Tunes

Perhaps, you're in the wrong country, red7Flag. You've provided a good beginning to a list of tunes played at Canadian Old-Time jams. We don't tend to play "The Eighth of January" much (we mostly...

    Re: Stuck in customs

I haven't heard that one, but it sounds like legend to me, though the Canadian government may have some rarely enforced rule to prevent folks along the border from going to the States for car and...

    Re: I Need a Favor

That's a good idea, Richard. Try reaching out to musicians and others around Williamsburg, especially seniors. You may reach donors in your area through Mandolin Cafe, but we're a widespread bunch....

    Re: Stuck in customs

To be fair, Customs can be arbitrary. I lived on the border, and was in cars that were searched, probably because they happened to be #25 or some such thing, and I've been in cars that breezed...

    Here's the D'Addario mandolin/ukelele capo:

Here, I'm playing a two-finger G chord, raised to an A by the capo, with no problem:

    Re: Tuning up

There are mandolin/ukelele capos, but I find them uncomfortable for my fretting hand. They would be smaller than banjo capos though.I bought one of the shelf at Long & McQuade, the big music chain in...

And, as a scientist on the radio said: Cavemen got cancer, dinosaurs got cancer. (He wasn't saying that people don't make toxins that cause cancer, or arguing against environmental clean up, just...
  13. Re: WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals...

There are probably a small number of people sensitive to these chemicals who'll appreciate the warning. Otherwise, for most of us, this is probably just one more element in the toxic stew already in...

I bought a package of nuts that said, "Warning: May contain nuts." I was hoping that the warning proved true.

    Re: Tuning up

Going back to the OP, Ed made clear that his reasons for not using capo did not have to do with "rules" or "cheating." He doesn't like using capos.

"Aside from the perceived shunning of 'real...

Man! I thought I'd avoided or given up most dangerous habits over they years, but now I'm wondering if I dare take my mandolins out of their cases. I can imagine telling my doctor that I play...

    Re: Tuning up

I don't have any advice about tuning higher, but I'm with you on capos, Ed. I couldn't care less about someone's rules about playing, but there isn't a great deal of room for my left hand on the neck...

I'm not sure whether the OP is still around. There hasn't been a comment since the first post on Nov. 11. Oh well, someone will find this thread useful.

Re: Violinist- New to Mandolin- Any Advice?

Having gone from fiddle to mandolin myself, I can say it's a bit of a process. In many ways, the mandolin is easier physically than fiddle, but, despite the similar tuning, you have to learn to use...

Saw this in today's Cafe ads. I don't know if it's what you want. If not, the person mentions the maker's name. She might have a greater selection.
