I have had a few Emandos over the years. I have a four string "V" that I built, an eight string semi solidbody (also I built) and a solid KENT mandola. I figured out pretty quick that whatever the...
Jim has it exactly right. If it's hurting, you may likely have a problem with the ergonomics of your playing. Are you useing a strap? I don't let my students play without one. It's good you are asking...
Also be aware of what the case will have to say about the steeper angle. A 'long since retired' mando maker up here in Canada was doing multiple experiments on each 'A" and "F" mando he was building...
I was'nt sure if anyone was interested in this. A friend of mine in Winnipeg purchaced an Eko 6 stringroundback bozouki back in '72 from a store there. He brought the thing home, played it for 45...
Tim, have a look at the thread "25 inch cittern scale" to get an idea what I did. You may find it interesting....Kerry K
The 25 inch scale did not lend itself (in my opinion) to octave strings. I built the neck with 10 strings, but took off all the octave strings as it was just not the sound I was looking for, and it...
Groveland, I'm going to build a small scale cittern and need a scale length to start with. It begins to look like 20 and a quarter inch is gonna be it. Thanks for your help...Kerry K
Is there no one here who can help me pick a scale?
I did a big conversion a few months back. I took a Norman guitar neck that I had replaced the headstock on (and never drilled the machine head holes for), shaved down the sides of it, and put it on a...
Gavin, they look amazing! But that is always the case with you. ..Kerry K
Brian, it looks terrific. You must be very happy...Kerry K
Young Ken is a very busy guy, but is working on some of the things suggested on this thread. We will know when he knows. Just so you know...Kerry K
I know a Luthier built a soundproof box big enough for his guitar and a large loudspeaker. The guitar gets strapped to the speaker with a piece of velvet in between to protect the finish. He has a...
Gavin ,Howdy from Prince George BC. Has anyone talked to you about change in sound? I would think that the customer you mentioned would be the perfect guy to comment on the before and after sound....
Great vids. Thanks for posting...Kerry K
I think this one might be the one on Ebay?...Kerry
Ken, the 5 string will have to have a longer scale to avoid the dreaded 'floppy C string" problem that is a given with the regular scale. 14.5 or longer is great... I bet you already knew that though...
Ken from IV is looking for manocello plans for the new kit they MAY be making. Were does a guy like him get some good plans? Thanks Cafe...Kerry
I just sent an private message to Ken concerning the mandola and mandocello kits and will get a reply soon if I know Ken.So the tally is 12 mandolas and 7 mandocellos.Pretty cool if you ask me. Kerry
I don't live in a good neiborhood, so there is always a chance I will get ripped off. I'm sorry I started this post. I was hoping for some encouragement...Kerry
Jg, after I realized how much it was worth, I decided not to leave it out so there was no possibillity of it getting ripped off. All my other instruments could go, but the Monteleone was welded to my...
I semi retired my Monteleon about 9 years ago after I found out how much the thing was worth. I found a great hiding place for it ,and it was just too much trouble to get it out, so to Winnipeg (2...
My first bought with insomnia was a V like this. Single vP bass pickup and later a Bill Lawrence dual blade pickup. Got lots of great comments while I was playing it out in the early 90s...Kerry K
About 1990, I somehow ended up with a TS pick. It turned out to be from the wrong species, and right away it started to 'shell' around the edges that were hitting the strings.Eventually, (about three...
At the begining of the '90s, I discovered Belcat pickups and preamps. I installed 3 or 4 in various instruments includind a Doyle handbuilt bouzooki. None of them ever worked properly, and some never...
