    Re: Whiskey barrel octave mandolin

Oh, I don't know about a waste of a whiskey barrel. Some folks get an idea in their head and come up with something unique. It's almost like folk art. I enjoy seeing these franken instruments from...

    Re: Washburn F-5..

I have not played one for six or seven years but the ones I played at a shop in NC were less than acceptable. The tone was thin and the fit and finish were horrible.

    Re: Random mandolin sightings

Neither Have I, the idea of an onion instead of a couple of olives in a martini is unthinkable.
  14. Re: First Mandolin Choice, what is available to me now

Happy to see that you are on your mandolin journey. If you are not playing Bluegrass, forget the chop chords and go with barre chords or three finger chords.
    Have fun!

Re: Dan Voight Nashville Area Luthier

Dan used to post here on occasion about his new builds, great looking mandolins as I recall, but I have not seen him post for quite a while. Glad to hear that he is still active.
  16. Re: Wow, David Benedicts new Apitius mandolin

I posted that in the builders forum yesterday. But yes, great looking mandolin.

Well that was a very nice gift. That is a beautiful F-2. Here is one for sale that looks to have similar back and side woods to yours.....

  19. Re: Going from mandolin to tenor guitar - technique differences?

The tenor guitar opens up finger style playing. I like to tune the C up to a D (DGDA) and explore the possibilities. Have fun!
  20. Re: What have I got here-is this old mandolihomemade or by a buil

Well whatever it is, someone played the heck out of it judging by those fingerboard divots.

Re: Lutherie as an art form

Whether or not lutherie is an art form probably won't be resolved. Certainly not here. It is fair to say that SOME luthiers incorporate some artistic choices in the design of their instruments. I...
