  1. Re: What is the "Allure" of The Gibson Snakehead?

I wonder why Gibson did not continue with the Snakehead in their A models? If at the time, the snakehead was thought to be a better sound then why go back to the paddlehead?

    The snakehead makes...
  2. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

I've hand hundreds over the last 50 years (probably about 500) but am pushed to say any is better than the 2016 Big Mon I currently own. I've played 3 Big Mons and this one just has more pop and...

Re: Scooping out the extended fret board

The A4 style one looks really good and is the best shape IMO. I don;t go for long scoops especially when made on new instruments. Pointless. I don;t like the Sam Bush style shape. Just looks wrong.

    Re: Tuning down old Gibson

To the post from Musicofanatic I very well know that and adverse neck effects is not really the main point of this, just a side issue. Habing said that, there are people who have concern on that...

    Tuning down old Gibson

I have always had my old Gibsons (I've had many) tuned to concert pitch.

The scale length of my current 1919 F4 is close to 14" and whilst it has always been easy enough to play, I'd probably...

    Re: Demonstrating a mandolin

I agree 100%. There is one individual, regularly on Cafe Classifieds, youtube etc who wants to show the speed he can play and he is not alone. Total waste of the demo . We want to hear VOLUME and...

Re: The Dewey Murphy Loar Mandolin Project

I love these stories of how people came to acquire such things as Lloyd Loar mandolins. I read Ricky Skaggs story and a few others. Great !!
  9. Re: Going out of tune upwards... Explain this to me, please!

Bridge being too far forward is obvious cause of mandolin getting sharp. Certain bowlbacks do not have proper intonation on bridge top. Nut slots too high is an obvious one. Ultra light strings don't...

    Re: My Journey so far.

Yeah Tom. It was Arthur Robinson from Scarborough who used to make plectrums. I bought a Holoubek 000-42 guitar from him and later on he put me on to a Holoukek 000-45. He is sadly deceased now but...

    Re: My Journey so far.

Hi Tom. I'm Scottish and live in Northumberland. I've owned hundreds of mandolins and acoustic guitars (high end and low end) over the last 50 years. No disrespect meant but when you said the Eastman...

  13. Re: Ordered a Northfield F5S, Received a Big Mon Wide Nut by Mist

I'd see a way to getting the Big Mon. It's got the lot and you'd soon get used to the wider fingerboard. I don't know why other builders dont make a 'slightly bigger mandolin' like the Big Mon. A...

Re: Mando (and why to quit callin it that...)g

Ah-----I see now, regarding the 'g' in calling. I think many such terms, including mando, come under the ' folksy colloquialism or conversational manner of writing or saying words' but it doesn't irk...

Re: Mando (and why to quit callin it that...)g

The poster of this topic uses the term Callin which is an abbreviation for the proper word CALLING. If he gets annoyed at abbreviations then why use Callin?

    Re: Top Current Makers

Northfield has to be in there. The Big Mon has made it's mark.
  17. Re: thin sounding treble strings on Collings?

You can fatten up the sound by filing/sanding the top of the bridge saddle so the strings are not sitting on a tiny pinnacle. However that just needs to be ever so little as it will slightly lower...

I agree with Ray T. I honestly cannot see many mandolin cases being sold in the UK at £650. The odd pro musician travelling perhaps but good luck to Leon.

    Re: Odd mandolin

Could be one of the VERY early Gibsons (probably pre 1905) where the body rim was rounded/curved and as opposed to the later design of separate sides.
  20. Re: old Gibson Mandocello K2 with short neck

Great scale length for octave mandolin and always possible as mentioned previously that it was mandocello damaged and someone preferred the idea of octave mandolin. I reckon it should sound really...

Re: What's GDAE and audible in a session?

It is an F-hole that is preferred for bluegrass , rather than an F-body.

Re: What's GDAE and audible in a session?

National RM-1 as previously said would be the one to use. Cut through almost anything. I don[t have one but over the years two people have used them in a 16 piece band and they work. Very little else...

Re: What kind of hat do I need?

If you want to LOOK a better player, you don't need a hat. Just don;t look at your fretboard as much, as if you can do it blindfolded. Then you may look a better player ---but a hat? NO way.
  25. Re: F-style recommendation for 6-800 dollars and online tutorials

A mandolin which sells new for $1000 would go for around $700 used and in many cases these mandolins may only have tiny scratches etc and sometimes none. You may find your $600- $800 would buy you a...
