Re: Vintage photo of a Lyon & Healy two point

Looking at the Washburn book, I see that the mandolin has the headstock commonly called "art deco." It was introduced in 1920 or after (replacing the "stairstep" headstock), which narrows the date...

Re: Vintage photo of a Lyon & Healy two point

Will be interesting if someone can identify the guitar.

And what's more, who made their matching pinstripe suits? Which indicates that they were likely a performing duo.

Vintage photo of a Lyon & Healy two point

I recently picked up this swell photo. A style B, I believe. It's a postcard photo; nothing on the back unfortunately.183633

    Re: F2/F4 style mandolins?

Perhaps you need to be clearer in your mind whether you want a hybrid or a true F4/2 style. Northfield's are hybrids of course. If you want a true one I'd really consider getting a vintage Gibson...

Re: Quick Gibson A set up question

Actually, I found one. I decided I'd prefer a paddlehead, had one from a dealer sent to me that looked good, and liked it but then realized it had a bow in the neck. Sent it back, too. Thought I...

Mr. Compton on the right hand.

A few days ago I had a pleasant email exchange with Mike Compton over a CD of his ("Gallop to Georgia") that I ordered but that for some reason got sent back. it sent me to his website, where I...

Re: Quick Gibson A set up question

Thanks for the info and suggestions, all. It might well be an easy fix but I don't think I will risk accepting it. So alas it's heading back tomorrow.

Quick Gibson A set up question

    Hi all,
I'm making a decision today on whether to keep a 1925 Gibson jr that was sent to me. I like it a lot but presently the action is a bit high to me. 1/16 on the e, a shade under 2/16 on the G....

    Re: New Eastman 615

Congrats. The Twelfth Fret is a lovely store. In our house are several instruments from the shop, including an 1895 R.S. Williams Banjo made in Toronto.

Re: Gibson snakehead Jrs vs other snakeheads

Just for interest, I have paid $1500 for the snakehead Jr. (There were two others available, two for 2,000 and one for 1,700. Only one was in the same excellent condition as the one I bought.) ...

Re: Gibson snakehead Jrs vs other snakeheads

I am aware they don't have a truss rod, thought they had a rod or stiffener of some sort. They have the narrower nut and slimmer necks of other snakeheads.

Re: Gibson snakehead Jrs vs other snakeheads

Hi again, and happy holidays. Thought some might like to know that after looking at a lot of mandolins, and emails with owners and stores, and having videos made for me, I settled on a 1925...

    Re: Book disappointment

Like others, I suggest you contact GM through his site or here on the cafe.

And like others, I found his book of high value and used it to build a nice flat top.

Gibson snakehead Jrs vs other snakeheads

    Hi all,
I've tried only one snakehead jr and didn't love it. I know that Juniors are mostly stripped down versions of higher models, but also their tops tend to have much wider grain. If you've...
  18. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

Hey Bob, funny I don't seem to remember the Anderson. Maybe you brought in the Weber for a class after we talked about it. Or just mentioned it. This reminds me to take out your and Amy's CD that...
  19. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

Hey Jim N, just to clarify. By "busted" I didn't mean a person would be 'arrested' or told off. I just meant that the tune might get off track and have the wheels fall off. In my experience,...
  20. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

Right, DoubleE, I'm curious about people's experience, not in defining for anyone else what works in old time. There's no doubt all mandolins can be played. I personally prefer the oval sound in...
  21. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

Hey, no problem! Truth is, I know far too much about mandolins for my own good! I'm really wondering who plays them and in what situations, since i see them rarely if ever out in the world. They...
  22. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

In old time, Jim, the fiddle is king and I happily bow down. I'm a late starter. I was 45 when I took up mandolin. I'm just glad I can play one instrument.
  23. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

Jim N, sounds like those mandolin players were having a good time but if they were wailing and improvising, they'd bust a traditional old time jam. Old time jams are about blending into the sound,...

  25. Question about late twenties Gibson A's

    Hi all,

I know people tend to prefer the Loar era A's of about 1924-25. I also know others have different opinions and that every mandolin has its own voice.

What I'm wondering is what people...
