    Re: Informal Poll

The two most expensive instruments I have bought were a cello and a viola. Both were exceptional for the price $12,000 and $5500 respectively. One to each daughter. Those were merely serious student...

    Re: Case search

I have my F style with toneguard and armrest in a TKL oblong case. Very tight fit, but if I line it up flat and gently press, it slides right in. My Travelite has a bit more room.

    Re: Informal Poll

Please ditch the notion you have to reach a level of ability to deserve a fine instrument. For one thing, builders would go broke. Buy what you want to for whatever reasons but this one. My mission...

Re: old Flatiron, old guy, some thoughts

Value was not foremost in my mind. The Loar reference was poorly chosen. Lets just say I'm very happy to have an all original 1913 A 1. No improved adjustable bridge, no replaced tuners, intact...

Re: The virus, the economy, mandolins and you

My grandson turned 7 last week. At ten in the morning, my daughter acting on a text message, put her laptop in front of him and one by one his classmates came on to wish him a happy birthday. His...

Re: old Flatiron, old guy, some thoughts

Once upon a time, a Loar was just another used mandolin. Don’t do anything that can’t be undone.

    Re: 1913 A1 thoughts

For any owner of a teens Gibson, likely a young man bought it to join a mandolin orchestra and meet respectable young ladies, or visa versa.

My good friend's mom growing up used a rock mortar and...

Re: Just bought my first mandolin!

I've had two vicarious buying experiences this week, your Country Boy odyssey, and a long PM back and forth with Doug. Two good outcomes. Doug overcame a scroll desire and chose quality, a difficult...

    Re: A Mandolin Strap question

Heck, you can just buy a long pair of bootlaces, noose at both ends and you can spend a whole seven bucks. I did this with my A 1. Seems right for that mandolin.

I got my Silverangel with a real...

Re: Looking for beginner oval Mandolin

We in the US don’t know much about the UK market, but spend every bit of money you can. Your maximum is really the minimum you should spend, and buy used if you can.

    Re: Informal Poll

The creeping scale seems never ending. It used to be $1500 is where the good stuff starts, but somehow it $5-6K now for me. When I get that, it will be $12k, and on and on. How can people go on...

    Re: Waiting for UPS

Ears are funny things. They get accustomed to a sound, and at first don’t like another. They do adjust though. Going from dark to bright can sound harsh, and the other way sound muddy. Fortunately...

    Re: Informal Poll

What? An internet forum poll doesn't count as serious scientific market research? Serious mandolinists don't come hear for their information? People have real lives with better things to do? What...

    Re: Gibson Post Mortem

You set a fine example for us all. But you only have one subspecies, gibsonus mandolinus viperallis. You need gibsonus mandolinus scrollidoscious too.

    Re: Informal Poll

Go ahead and comment all you want. The gist was how many of you have $10k in your pocket right now, or credit for that and are willing to spend it right now. Not I already did that four times...

    Re: Gibson Post Mortem

It seems a lot of people with nice mandolins want a Gibson, and lots of people with Gibsons want a nice something else. Is this the latest trend? Multiple mandolins?

    Re: A Mandolin Strap question

Try slinging what you have over your shoulder instead of around your neck. If that doesn't work, another vote for Bailey.
  20. Re: String recommendation for Northfield NF-F5S ?

I have gravitated to monels in a .015 to .041 gauge on my brightest mandolin and like them a lot. You should give J 75s a shot just to experience the heavier strings, then get a coated string or...

Re: Just bought my first mandolin!

I’m so glad it didn’t get away. I was fraught with anxiety. Mandolessions.com has beginner material, and Peghead Nation has more defined courses. You have something that can last a while.

    Re: Attention Silverangel owners

I really like monels on a brighter mandolin, but would not put them on a SA. YMMV.

Re: The virus, the economy, mandolins and you

There will be deals. I hate that part of the crisis. My actual retired life is really not that different. With five dogs and a large garden, I routinely go a week without leaving my house. But...

    Re: Informal Poll

Well, I get two haircuts a year, so it would take quite a few years to save ten grand.

I have no criticism of anyone having four or five high dollar mandolins no matter how you came to pay for...
