    Re: Paul Hathway Octave Mandolin

Really? I missed it. Don't see one now, but you posted that 6 days ago. I would really like to find another one to have as a backup. Any chance you might think about selling or trading yours? Please...

    Re: Paul Hathway Octave Mandolin

How cool! I do not think he made more than a few. I love mine! Here is a photo of the label through the sound hole:

  3. Re: Tax and import duty buying a mandolin from the UK?

Thanks. Yes, I check it regularly for something that meets my wishes and is in my price range...
  4. Re: Tax and import duty buying a mandolin from the UK?

I think I just quoted you, but only in this private forum...

  5. Re: Tax and import duty buying a mandolin from the UK?

That is what I thought as well, but as you can see from the screen shot from Ebay a couple posts above, it quotes the import duty to be ~25% of the purchase price for a similar musical instrument...
  6. Re: Tax and import duty buying a mandolin from the UK?

FYI, this is from EBAY UK. Note the import charge ($230). Actually shipping ($48) is less than I would have thought. But the bottom line is that together they add almost $300 to the price of the...

  8. Re: Tax and import duty buying a mandolin from the UK?

Thanks for that genius idea! I did that and Ebay listed the price, shipping, and "U.S. import charges," which amounted to 25% of the cost of the instrument. Yikes! That plus international shipping...
  9. Re: Tax and import duty buying a mandolin from the UK?

Bren, thanks. I went down the CBP rabbit hole once and still could not figure it out for sure. But maybe I will try it again. It does look like duty is a maximum of 6% for the U.K. if I am reading it...
  10. Tax and import duty buying a mandolin from the UK?

I live in the U.S. and am hoping to buy an octave mandolin from Paul Hathway in the U.K. In addition to the price and shipping, which I got in an email from Paul, I understand I will have to pay...

    Re: Paul Hathway Octave Mandolin

I recall seeing that Lafferty octave mandolin for sale in the CBOM Classifieds a couple weeks ago, I believe for $1800, and when I went back to look for it later that day it was already gone. What...

    Re: Paul Hathway Octave Mandolin

Any more thoughts on Paul Hathway's OMs? I am considering buying one but have never heard or played one. They look nice and are reasonably priced. Maybe just me, but my personal preference is one...

    Re: Paul Hathway Octave Mandolin

To date, to my knowledge, there is only ONE Gibson octave mandolin, and it is not clear that it is actually an octave mandolin. The octave mandolin is a modern incarnation of the mandolin family...

    Re: Attention Silverangel owners

I also do not like changing strings. I really like the tone and feel of FT74s on my SA. I love the sound and feel of the wound A string. But based on this discussion I may try the J75s at some point....

Re: Seeking Octave Mandolin Plans and Advice

For a carved top octave mandolin, any ideas about the graduation of the top and back? Would they be similar to the measurements in Roger Siminoff's book, or maybe thicker? I reference that one...
  17. Re: There has got to be something better than Tabledit, right?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. Yes, standard notation is best, and I am working on learning it as I have time, but at this time I am playing with a band that does old time music and can...
  18. There has got to be something better than Tabledit, right?

IMO, Tabledit is an awful program. It is a nerd program and is not intuitive. I am far from computer illiterate, but have spent many hours just learning to tab out simple songs, and as soon as I need...

    Re: Quick Tabledit?

Tabledit sucks, big time. It is a nerd program and is not intuitive. Doing simple things are difficult. I have spend many hours just learning simple features, and as soon as I need to input something...

    Thanks, that is helpful.
  21. Re: Article: KR Strings Introduces the Mandolindo

OK, then a soprano or concert uke. I am just not understanding how this instrument is different from a comparable scale length ukulele with four strings tuned to GDAE. They certainly look the same....
  22. Re: Article: KR Strings Introduces the Mandolindo

I am not sure I understand the difference between a Mandolindo and a baritone Uke strung in fifths, GDAE...

Re: Seeking Octave Mandolin Plans and Advice

I am looking to find a neck for an OM that is 21" scale or less to put on the body of a bouzouki in place of the 26.5" scale neck. I do not have the tools or experience to do the work, but looking...
  24. Re: Silverangel MAX distressed with painting and carving

@kyken or any Silverangel owners who can answer this question: Hey Ken, a question for you: How do you decide which mandolins to paint angels on? Are they special in any other way? And I understand...
