Re: Help me identify this bowlback please!

Talking of "Cassari" I've seen a recent ad in the Italian classifieds of a known modern Italian luthier looking to outsource someone to do just the fluted mandolin bodies for his shop.

Re: Kerman Mandolin copy by Mintu Biswas

Avi Avital and many other Israeli mandolinists play instruments by Arik Kerman. They made him famous. It became a feature of Israeli school of mandolin playing. The instruments are double top and...
  3. Re: what did I just buy? I think its a Mandola

Either made in Germany or in Catania. Many Catanese makers made flatbacks similar to this one, too. They were advertised as "Portuguese mandolins".
  4. Re: Differences between Antonio Vinaccia and Pasquale Vinaccia?

Well, nothing prevents you to try Aquila. I haven't tried those myself, but some people have and the reports were positive. But Pasquale's instruments were designed for steel strings, of course.
  5. Re: Could someone help me identify this old bowl back?

Catania is probably the place. I have one by Puglisi in my files with the similar scratch plate style. Puglisi sometimes made instruments for the dealers without their own label inside. But they...
  6. Re: Could you help a young wannabe-mandolin player with a bowlbac

    NFI, but have a look:

    https://www.subito.it/strumenti-musicali/mandolino-privitera-napoli-335541164.htm

    Nice and inexpensive.

Or a Calace, which is a top brand and may well last you a...
  7. Re: Could you help a young wannabe-mandolin player with a bowlbac

South of Italy is the land of mandolins. I am not sure how much you are prepared to spend, but 300 Euro for example will buy you a decent bowlback in Italy, much better than this one. An easy option...

    Re: Tremolo technique

Thanks for the video, very nice! Please continue. The pick appears to be a Pickboy. Who is the maker of your instrument? It has a very full and bright tone. Thanks again and cheers from Canberra.

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Super cool Roman C. and Tavy's one is very nice, too, with fretboard extension, which is rare for a C. Is there a double top?

Haven't heard of Walter Taylor, but it would be nice to see the photos of that mandolin. Thanks.

Re: Wanted: Japanese Bowlback mandolin case

Yep, something like Jim have suggested. I thought they are plastic, but perhaps ply covered with vinyl. Doesn't matter whether vintage or not. Finding one in OZ would be great as otherwise postage...

    Vinaccia vs Embergher vsCalace Video

Hi all. Just recorded a short video comparing the sound of big three bowlbacks. All 3 well setup and all really sing, but all have slightly different sound to each other. What is your order of...

Re: Another old bowlback here. What is it?

Hi Matt. It is impossible to attribute your mandolin to any particular maker. Many makers made the similar features, they are not unique. Say, Luigi Salsedo made similar headstocks and bowl shapes...
  20. Re: Anyone have information on this very unique bowlback?

Beautiful Vinaccia 40 fluted ribs (correct me if I am wrong - I have counted 40), top of the range instrument, no doubt. Somewhat different to a classic Vinaccian look from the turn of the century,...

    C.F. Martin 80/20 strings on a bowlback

    Hi all.

I tried a set of Martin .010 -.034 M400 80/20 Bronze on a vintage Vinaccia some years ago and was pleasantly surprised with the sound compared to GHS ultra light set. This time I have...
  22. Jerry Miller - the banjo player's home-made book

Hi all. I thought I'd post a link to an interesting home-made book on banjo history I have recently got. It's not mandolin stuff, but still an interesting piece of U.S. musical history:

    Re: Derr mandolin, Toledo

I am not a great expert in US-made mandolins, but I agree that Derr was probably a reseller, rather than a maker. To me the instrument looks like a run of the mill turn of the century mandolin...
  24. Re: Highly decorated German bowl back mandolin 1900

Those metal bridges were made in Germany. I've seen them being for sale in the 1913 Russian dealer's catalogue in the section of sleeve guards, picks and other bric-a-brac. I guess they were sold...
