    Re: mildew in case

"Well the chimney's falling' down and the roofs all caved in, lettin' in the sunshine and the rain.
And the only friend I have now is this good old dog of mine, and the little old log cabin in the...

    Re: mildew in case

Not sure the value of the guitar but I'd be reluctant to ever use the case again. A good hard shell case can be had for about a hundred bucks, a decent gig bag for less than half. Sometimes you're...

    Re: Warm up song

I play St Anne's / Fischer' Hornpipe / Whiskey in that order. Someday I will try Whiskey before Breakfast. Literally! I'll occasionally sip a bourbon in the evening, but I've never tried it first...

    Re: Name that wood

Seeing the end grain picture I'm inclined to think its not white oak. Just saying.

    Re: Name that wood

Any chance of picture showing the end grain? I've done some woodworking projects (front porch rockers) and found white oak to be noticeably heavier than ash IMHO.
But the grain looks a little more...

    Re: Trigger Finger (s)

I had the beginning of trigger finger on my left hand index finger a couple years ago. My physical therapist said it was from repeated gripping motion ( playing our instruments for example) and this...

    Re: Cape Breton mandolin (1976)

    Re: Another newcomer

You mentioned early on it was a mando lute. Looks like a beautiful old mandolin to me. Yes I am jealous! Could someone post a pic of a mandolute so I can see the difference. Who need tubes and...

    Re: Cape Breton mandolin (1976)

Thanks for posting this clip. In the last two years I've gone off on a tangent playing more Irish fiddle tunes, and more recently, New England and French Canadian fiddle tunes. Both of the tunes on...

    Re: Another newcomer

Welcome to the Cafe! Being of Irish kin myself (my mother's maiden name was Doyle) I have gotten off on a tangent lately playing a lot more Irish tunes on the fiddle and mandolin. And yes Oneill's...

Re: Do You Baby Your Mandolin?

Hi Mandoman. My Jethro Burns Washburn is a M5S-SB s/n 824691. Imported from Japan early 1980s. As with many imports of this era it has a kinda heavy gloss finish that hinders the volume. But the...

Re: Do You Baby Your Mandolin?

When I'm not playing them (any of my instruments - mandolins, guitars, banjos, fiddles) they are in a case. I don't own any that would be considered high end but still I've spent good money on them...

After hearing this news I just had to listen to Home of the Red Fox Rebel Records REB-1651 released in1987. Not only one of the best banjo albums ever recorded but a really great lineup of artists...
  16. Re: bowl back mandolin attic find, help identify?

Thanks all, I'm very new to bowlbacks and find all this history fascinating. My first was a yard sale wall hanger. Not at all playable but looks good hanging with wine theme above the dry bar. Now...

  20. Re: bowl back mandolin attic find, help identify?

Very similar to a mandolin I recently found at an estate sale. Mine is clearly stamped "Geo. Bauer Philadelphia" on the back of the headstock. This dates it to about 1900.
    The decorative binding...

    Re: Vice grip fingers

I came from the acoustic guitar ( bluegrass ...slightly higher action than normal) to the mandolin and it took me quite a while to learn to play with a lighter grip. And it took a conscious effort...

JB that's great! Don't know where you find this stuff in your archives but I love the history. Now that we have a trashy enough anthem let's all converge on Kansas!
