Re: Woke with a chord question

The name is just a name. The root is part of that name. That name may change depending on where the song is going at the moment. As far as the music goes the name is not all that important. How...

    Re: What a Blast

Chris really has the Sam Bush head shaking thing going on there. Maybe that helps.

Seriously it looks like a lot of right hand work going on there between the chord stuff and crosspicking. You...
  4. Re: Best way to learn to play Smooth and Clean (not sloppy)?

One thing that helped with clean sound almost more than any other for me was to make sure each note rings into the next note following it. Do not lift your finger till the next note is played. My...
  5. Re: Who is a member/board member of a local BG/OT/Folk Society?

One other thing to consider. If you meet at someones house or a park and no money changes hands and there is no formal organization you can play any music you like. If you have a jam at a public...

No two in nature are alike :)
  7. Re: Wrecked fingers can't make 'block chords', time to quit?

By the way, though there is no evidence of Django playing mandolin what there is evidence of is Barry Abernathy playing bluegrass banjo at a very high level. Look him up. Look at his left hand. No...
  8. Re: Wrecked fingers can't make 'block chords', time to quit?

My fingers are more wrecked than yours. I still play. I had a Django level injury to the left hand, removing the ends of two fingers.

Learning where the block chords are is a good idea. You can...

Re: If it's not the heat, is it the humidity?

Oasis makes a smaller humidifier for mandolin F holes. Dampit and several others make violin humidifiers for the f hole. Case humidifiers can work also.

Re: If it's not the heat, is it the humidity?

If you keep it in a case when not playing and use a soundhole humidifier it may behave better.

Re: Woke with a chord question

You are pretty deep into the mandolin if it is keeping you awake at night :) Leo Kottke told a story about a classical cello player who got so wound tight with his instrument that it started talking...
  12. Re: Does anyone have experience or advice about finger rehabilita

Congratulations thus far and good luck. Keep the faith and think long term, three, five or even ten years. You will make it back.

Re: Sleep with One Eye Open

This is by the person who is apparently the author. It is not a real old tune, no earlier than the 1960s possibly later. It has a couple of other names such as Canadian Waltz or Eskimo Waltz.

  14. Re: lattice or x brace reconstruction on oval hole 1915 Washburn?

There is lots of archery in Illinois. One of the biggest archery tournaments in the Midwest is being held in Peoria in about 3 weeks. I am sure there are archery shops in the Chicago area a swell...

    Australian Guitar Making Workshop

This reminds me of the mandolin school/shop John Hamlett was involved with.

Re: How often should my mandolin need to be tuned?

It is surprising that your banjo rarely needs tuned. They are almost as notorious as the mandolin for requiring regular tuning. I first heard the saying Ed quotes about spending half your time...

Here are the verse and chorus. I also included a version of the chorus with double stops and added notes.

Re: Mando Tab for Choices by George Jones

Here is an intro somewhat based on the fiddle intro in the CMT show he was finally allowed to sing it on. I will try to get the whole song later today or tomorrow.

I heard a comment from Tim Connell in a live chat today that Artistworks had undergone ownership changes and that Mike has a lot less input into the content of the courses since that change. I am...

  21. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

This is a fair statement for this particular tune but just to be clear songs or tunes do not necessarily start on the note for the key they are in. Probably more start on other notes than start on...
  22. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

In that same vein I worked for a while with a singer who thought Key meant the chord. She would ask me "What are the keys to this song?" wanting to know the chords. She would move the capo to fit...
  23. Re: Why are some songs not written in the key they are in?

This one appears to be a poorly written transcription.

However in other cases with bluegrass, music written for guitar or banjo will commonly be written in the key of C or G with capo...
