    Re: Orchestra

I played in the New York Mandolin Orchestra for a number of years. When I first started I could read music notation on mandolin rudimentarily but I got somewhat better as time went on. My background...

    Re: The cure for MAS

Many years ago Christies had an auction in NYC of a collector who had a whole house full of antique church basses. He was quite wealthy but I think his wife was going to divorce him. I was...

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

Maybe five or six years ago I remember somebody bid up a Loar era F-4 to over $10k but nothing like that since.

which luthier, Tim? There are two for Carlo model.
  6. Re: National Mandolin Tailpiece, repair or replace?

Harry Eibert repaired mine many years ago. He is up near Syracuse,NY. I believe he would have replated it for a little more money. At that time there were no replacements except original period ones....

    Re: Arnold Cross Mandolins

take a look at Arnold’s site linked above. There are lots of photos if you scroll way down to the available section. I can see sort of a “volute” in the back views. Is that what you are talking about?
  8. Re: Vintage photo of a Lyon & Healy mando cello

I found another photo of this band here on North Dakota Historical Society, however, no mandocello.

Also, more info on members of the band here.

Re: New Carlo Aonzo Perfetto Mandolino

That works though my attempt at nomenclature was descriptive in that it loosely reminded me of a boat hull. One of my favorite makers of these was Mozzani. I played one belonging to the conductor of...

Re: What brand mandolin is this?

I think that is Aaron. Just with his head cut off. Ouch! When I met him he was playing a Red Diamond.
  12. Re: Looking for help with bowlback mandolin identification

I agree with Mick. Also, assuming the scratchplate was original, I don't recall ever seeing a white one with that shape on a bowlback and the butterfly inlay is a bit unusual as well. Is that back...
  13. Re: Vintage photo of a Lyon & Healy mando cello

I have played a few L&H mandocelli and I don't recall the necks being that "baseball battish". In fact I would say they were less so than teen Gibson mandocelli. I think the L&H were among the best...

    Re: Have I Been Scammed?

I came across a "Vintage Stradolin Mandolin with Bell Brand tail piece" for a mere $50.95 on a site that sold teen clothes. I did find a site that has some stats about site like these:...

    Re: Estate Sale Bowlback

NickR: first to defend my 2016 post, I did not state that ACME was a Sears brand just quoted Mike Holmes and stated that I did not think it was so and more likely made by George Bauer for SS Stewart....

    Re: Best all time Inlay's

I always love those coffee- colored tuner buttons but I don’t recall ever seeing them on an F-4, only on A-4s.

  20. Re: Recommendations for a great Jazz tenor guitar?

Funny that this thread is supposed to be about OP acquiring an arch top TG and not acquiring a tenor guitarist who is no longer with us. :)
  21. Re: Luthier special: Sheraton brown Gibson A2 in need of help

I think they are just pricing the parts: tuners and tailpiece. Other than that I think if anyone wanted this they could bargain with them for a lower price.

  25. Re: Vintage Two Point Carved Top Mandolin - Looking for informati

Or replace the tailpiece altogether. I wonder, though, if the depth of the sides is non-standard or at least a bit less deep than most mandolins. That looks like a standard clamshell TP.
