Re: Oval Hole Heaven at Greg Boyd’s

I have all the oval I need to. The Waterloo is a lot of mandolin, especially for a flattop. And Lawrence Nyberg is building me another flattop mando. But I've never owned an F4.....

Oval Hole Heaven at Greg Boyd’s

Talk about a nice selection of ovals! I wonder if someone liquidated an F4 collection?

‘24 Gibson, Brentrup, Gilchrist, Sawchyn, and an oval Monteleone Baby Grand!

    That Brentrup is calling my...

Re: In search of a mandolin...

That's enough to tell me what I need to know! LOL I was a violinist before I found the mandolin. Good instruments are expensive for a reason. You're going to need that $10k. People tend to...

Re: In search of a mandolin...

How much did you pay for your violin? I have a feeling you will need to be solidly in the $10k range to get what you're looking for.

Re: In search of a mandolin...

Lots of options in that range. Gryphon is a great store but fairly limited on the higher end mandolins. You most likely will have to fly somewhere to buy or have it shipped with an approval period...

    Re: Happy Anniversary Mandolin Cafe!

Found this site in the late 1990s along with Mandozine. Met a lot of great friends and played and heard a lot of good music because of it. To many more! :mandosmiley:

    Re: Bill Monroe’s “Strawberry Point”

This tune stumped the Monroe group on Facebook. Well, one member was familiar with it from this recording. You learn something new every day! Was unaware of the Roanoke album as well. Now I have a...

    Re: Bill Monroe’s “Strawberry Point”

Never heard of that tune. There is some unrecorded stuff floating around out there. But this would be a new one on me. Where did you hear about it?

I remember a time when getting to hear Monroe's mandolin played again would have elicited some excitement around here. Strange times we're living in. Strange indeed.....

Last night the CMHF aired their fundraiser that showcased some of the historical instruments they care for. So great to hear them in the hands of some modern day masters. Monroe’s old F5 sounded...

    Re: Kimble two point reviews?

I only know of one oval two pointer. Made to resemble Jethro’s two point. It’s a great mandolin. There could be others. He made 2-3 F4s and a larger number of oval A models. Will quit making ovals...

    Re: Kimble two point reviews?

I’ve owned 6.....an oval A, two A5s, an A-style mandola, an earlier Englemann topped F5, and my keeper F5 #153. Had it for about 5 years now. Some of them I bought. A few I took in trade on other...

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

I have one of each. If an F-style is uncomfortable, you're holding it wrong. Don't push the point into your leg. Let the flat part of the lower point rest on the side of your leg. I have no use...
