Re: Marketing and getting your name/brand out.

When I got interested in acoustic guitars, I started collecting them and soon I had about 25. Anyway, time passed and I was only playing three of them so I sold the rest which took a year or so. My...

Hi Todd, your instruments look beautiful and original and I wish you success. I’d keep contributing the Mandolin Cafe and publish pics of your latest builds. We all like to see what’s being created...

Re: Why So Few Resonator Mandolins?

i’ve recently bought a Beltona. Haven’t played it at a Session yet as it’s gone back to Steve Evans for a slight adjustment. I previously had an RM1 which was really too loud & made me self...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

It sounds really good to me especially for the classical-type piece you played. My old friend Martin Jenkins played a Mandocello which he christened the "Swine o phone" probably because it was a...

    Re: Resonator mandolin repair

I imagine the end block has come adrift and the string tension has broken the bodywork. I think this is an easy repair, when you take all the metalwork off you'll see what's going on.

    Re: Three Beginner Questions

I play an oval hole because I can hear what I'm playing when I'm in a group as the sound comes out sideways a bit more.

The mistake I made was to turn the Mandolin too far towards my ears to hear...
  11. Re: oddball (pseudo?-) resonator w. amusing "professional" setup

Cathedranola was a Slingerland name, here's the matching Guitar. Slingerland made high quality drums out of a factory in Chicago & went into Banjos & resonator instruments. Gibson own the name now....

    Re: 1762 instrument

It seems to have five pairs of strings which probably makes it a Cittern. Reynolds was the top Portraitist of his time so I guess he'd have an eye for accurate detail. It's a great painting.

Re: Shellac finish problems on new mandolin

Ebony has pale streaks in it, maybe you just didn't notice them before.

Ordinary French polish i.e. Shellac isn't a very tough finish, but on the other hand it's easy to remove and re-apply. I...

Hi Mike, I'd recommend learning some traditional tunes if you feel like branching out a bit. It gets your fingers moving nicely and it's fun learning new ones. The beauty of having a good Mandolin...

Re: Opinions on the Dobro Ampliphonic Mandolin

Hi, I bought one in the UK last year. I had the neck reset as the strings are very close to the cover plate, which looks like a design fault, I believe the 30's ones are the same.

Re: Old Gibson with Cedar Top

The Harp Guitar on page 5 of the book is also 1905. I think perhaps nothing was standardised until around 1910. I have a 1910 A4 which is virtually identical to modern A4's

Re: Heavy gauge strings (J75) on a vintage Gibson A

When I was playing around with different strings I put Martin Mediums (10 to 34) on my 1910 Gibson A4 and it got louder.

It had sounded what I can only describe as "nasal" with J74's.

I think that means the varnish has to stay in place. I would clean it and wax polish it. More French Polish would seal in the discoloured parts.

I think Mango wood would be quite stiff, so it may be better for the back and sides. It's very pretty wood with a nice curly grain from what I have seen.
