  1. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

I favor bling free instruments. No fancy inlays, gold hardware, and please... small or no logo .
I want the quality of design, materials and workmanship to be extraordinary and I'll pay the price. ...
  2. Re: Ordered a Northfield F5S, Received a Big Mon Wide Nut by Mist

Northfield's wide nut is too narrow.
Honorable to advise them of the mistake.
    Offer nothing to keep it.
    It isn't a Gilchrist or a Nugget..
it's a Northfield made in China.

    Re: LMI closing

"$4.50 board prep + $11 to slot plus a $25 "small job charge" for less then 10 boards of the same scale = $45. Ouch."

    $40.50,? but still "ouch".

And how much after LMI closes.?

Re: The long road back begins at last

    Hi Steve,

1992 I was deep into classical mandolin and some side adventures into American style to include a classes with David Grisman.
I managed to put my right hand into a shaper (you wood...

Re: Best wood for a bridge plate

There are many kinds of maple.. do not use Western Big Leaf.. soft and punky.
  7. Re: Gibson anomaly at [shocker!] Guitar Center

" That's how a certified appraiser would write it up"

Define "certified appraiser.".. By whom and what entity ?

Bottom line, this mandolin is the equivalent of a "parts caster"

Re: 1981 Givens A3 Mandolin Used

    I bought an A-3 new.
Later I "upgraded" to an A-6.
Both were exceptional instruments in quality of construction.
I miss the A-3.. to my ear, superior.
  13. Re: I want to do an economic study of the careers of luthiers

I spent 25 years in the car biz, the first 11 were fun and rewarding. Then I became a Jr Executive piggie in the same profession but a "factory rep" for Euro highline car makers teaching auto biz...

    Re: David Lindley, RIP

I met David many moons ago in Claremont while visiting my girlfriend. It was she who introduced us.
He was a wonderfully bizarre individual and a remarkable musician.

    Re: Buying from Brazil

You would be buying from a dealer, not from the maker.
Just under $3000 USD sounds high to me.

Try contacting the maker and have one made.
    Jus a suggestion.

  17. Re: I've owned an A-style for 72 hours and already hate the shape

    I prefer the A style.

I hold them just fine.. no strap needed.

I recall a conversation with Gilchrist a few decades ago about A vs F styles. He said there is no tonal difference in his, and...
  18. Re: Four mandolins stolen today from The Mandolin Store

I suggest these were late, promised Xmas gifts and not stolen for resale.
That based on the moronic selection of the goods.

    Re: Shout Out To D'Addario

The vast majority of my string purchases are D'Addario. This has been the case for several decades.
Quality and consistency; classical guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and mandolin.

  22. Re: The Most Elegant f-holes I’ve Ever Seen

There is style, and class, and elegance, this has all three.
Three cheers for not being "normal" .

The "f" holes seem to be somewhere between Strad and Guarnari.
