I switched from violin to mandolin about 30 years ago. I started off with a Flatiron flat top, which I still own and love, but after about 5 years I switched to an Eastman 615 f-style. I discovered...

  4. The great 440 Hz conspiracy, and why all of our music is wrong

An interesting story of how 'A' became 440 Hz and why many people believe it should be 432 Hz. The change really does change how music sounds.

    Re: Function of mandolin rims

Another option to consider would be routing/carving out the back and sides together and then gluing on a carving top.

    Re: Spalted Mandolins?

I frequently use spalted wood in wood turning. It makes beautiful patterned bowls but you frequently have to stabilize the wood before or during turning using CA glue or polyester resin. You also...

Re: Change your strings right now!

I also play the fiddle and can't remember the last time I changed strings. I suspect there's much less wear on the strings due to the lack of frets and no hard pick continually striking across them.
  11. Re: Why did you choose the mandolin over another instrument?

I originally learned how to play classical violin and was looking to get into bluegrass, but found I just couldn't swing on the violin. So I switched to playing the mandolin because I wouldn't have...
  12. Re: Top classical pieces every mandolin player should know

As a relative beginner, some pieces I'd like to add are:

J.S. Bach - Minuet in G, Bourree in E Minor, and March in D Major

Handel - Bourree and Hornpipe from the Water Music Suite

    All of...

    Re: Flatiron Information Packet

Thanks for posting this. It's nice to be able to add more the the history of my 1984 Flatiron 2MW. It's still a great mandolin for playing Irish music.
  19. Re: What kind of music peeves your pets, and other plays?

Our doesn't mind me playing the mandolin but leaves the room as soon as I turn on the metronome when I'm practicing. The fiddle is completely different as she will try to nip at me whenever and no...
