    Gear for Electric Mandolin

I'm curious what gear you use with your electric mandolin?

I have an Eastman El Rey coming soon and will be playing primarily jazz/blues with it. Am looking for a pure tone quality. No fuzz, etc....

Re: Tips for moving up the neck needed

You may benefit from practicing scales and arpeggios up and down the neck. Once you do this, the notes in the upper range will become more familiar and shifting from low to high more comfortable.

    Re: Experimenting with Logic Pro

Nice recording. Logic is a great piece of software.
  4. Re: How do you think of the fretboard - closed patterns or just n

For me, both. But patterns obviously arise due to the mandolin's tuning.

    Re: Eastman 505 vs 505CC

No neck binding is probably an aesthetics decision due to having no binding on the body.
  7. Re: Eastman MD304's fully attached fretboard design

I looked at some other models. I guess it has to do with the oval sound hole. Interesting.
  8. Eastman MD304's fully attached fretboard design

I just received an Eastman MD304 I ordered online. The fingerboard is fully attached to the front body, unlike a MD505 I played at one time. I had not noticed this prior to ordering.

    Other than...

    Re: Speakers for mixing

Large monitors can get quite boomy in a smallish room. I sold my KRK 8" when we moved and my studio space shrunk. I now use Focal 5" and am quite happy with them.

One thing to consider, if you...

    Re: Eastman 805 Review

I've played several mandolins in my limited time with the instrument. The 805 is my favorite acoustic. Such a nice sound.

    Why Mandolin?

For me, the size of the neck and the fret spacing fits my hand. When I first picked up a mandolin, I remember thinking, "Wow, this thing really fits." I've played other string instruments over the...

    The El Rey's Humbucker shines!

I've had an Eastman El Rey ER-M for less than a week. Lovin' it! I got the ER-M to record directly into a DAW.

It looks great, plays great, and the sound is superb. I'm playing it through a...

Thanks. More time with the ER-M this evening. Will be a learning curve but I am really enjoying the possibilities.

    Picking technique on electric mandolin?

I recently picked up an Eastman ER-M. Seems with my normal mandolin picking technique I run into the pickups. (Probably due to some sloppiness and newness to the instrument.)

    I'm wondering how...

Speaking of pick angle, and not to hijack the topic, what do you find to be the optimal angle for the pick as it comes across the strings? Is the pick parallel with the string, slightly angled? Is...

    Re: Eastman Mandolin Advice

I just bought a 2016 Eastman MD615 for $950. A step above your 505. But you may want to hang out with the 505 for awhile. Build up some chops and get a better idea what tone you are after.
