Re: Regal Tenor in Want Ads

I just saw this thread this morning. I am the seller and the guitar has sold, with 48 hour approval pending. Yep, I love the spruce top Regals presuming they have been cured of any problems like neck...
  2. Re: A quick and inexpensive way to try the tenor guitar

Mredsma - For a 20s Regal tenor, I just got a Kala Sonoma Coast gig bag (really nice and protective) for about $60 and it is a snug but good fit in every direction. To me, a perfect house for my 20s...

Identical to mine except mine is almost four years old now. Incredible, aren't they? I totally agree with Kevin - play it hard and listen for it to develop even more. Mine certainly did, within the...

As far as I know, these are the only ones that are an easy drop in fit (and they work very well)....

Re: Loud, or Not So Loud?

I have a portable, air-conditioned and heated practice facility that really works well for me, whether at work or home. Its called the back seat of my car. Seriously.

    Re: Reel picking

I endorse Whistler's Approach A (well described by the way!) but do incorporate a fair bit of hammer-ons and some pull-offs for "cheap and easy" triplets also. They do get a bit lost in a session...
  7. Re: Thoughts on humidity...like hurricane humidity...

Having gone through Hurricane Harvey here, don't forget to take pictures of everything valuable before you evacuate. Just make a movie on your cell phone, with a running description of what you are...

    Re: Me? A copyright violator?

I would just delight in the fact that a computer can't tell you from a pro playing that tune - way to go!

    Re: 1970s Sobell

Roger I believe Stefan pegged mine as 1977. Same label as your zouk.
  10. Re: Post a photo of your 70s-early 80s Sobell, Abnett, etc.

My "I think we figured 1977" Sobell Mandolin with blue Vader-Shag case. It's my baby!
I replaced the tuners in the mid 80s and the case handle a few years ago, all else is original.

Same label as my mandolin. Apparently his son was making the tailpieces back then. I would love to hear your once it gets fixed up!

    Re: Instrument Vibrator--It Works!

I am just thinking that rather than buying 6 mandos in the $400-$1200 range, plus the $150 for this device, I personally would choose to spend all that (or less) on one rather nice mandolin that...
  13. Re: Hearing yourself without playing too loud in a band

I must have missed what was so insulting about JL277z's post. I think a lot of people have commented both on the technical/gear side of the question and the behavioral/emotional side, but you are...
  14. Re: Hearing yourself without playing too loud in a band

Mswlogo - I am a tenor banjo player and have played in contra bands a bunch. I take it that she needs to hear herself better while playing relatively quietly in the mix, so here are some suggestions...

    Re: Liam O'Flynn (Planxty) RIP

He was the entire reason I took up uilleann piping, which now profoundly affects how I play mandolin in Irish trad. A huge loss.
  16. Re: Interview with Rory Dowling of Taran on new "Springwell" mand

Congrats Kevin! You will love it. I am sure it is ALMOST as good as mine! :-) (Which you are largely responsible for me getting in the first place, so thanks for that!)

    Re: Mandolin Banjo

I think the best in this genre is to use either a mandolin banjo that was built for having only 4 strings or one that was converted from 8 to 4. I have a20's Yosco (Yosco originated the internal...

Re: Counterfeit D'Addario Strings from Amazon

Ivan, the point is that the customs agents do not know that D'Addario strings are not made in China. There could be a factory in China making mandolins labeled as "Ellis" and the customs agents would...

    Re: Resonator mandolins

Foldedpath, come on over to the dark side. My RM1 sounds a bit "much" by itself at home, but in a good mid sized session with a box, fiddles, flutes, etc, the tone sort of rises and it sounds just...
  20. Re: String And Pick Gauges For Irish/Scottish Trad

Yep, the picks are ok but your playing is lovely!

(I use a TAD40 or a TAD30 depending on mood and mandolin and really do like their picks.)

    Re: Celtic/Irish Mandolins

I strongly prefer the tone of ovals for ITM over f hole models. You can certainly play on either, just my preference. My favorite sound is my Taran - a very clear sound that projects really well for...
  22. Re: String And Pick Gauges For Irish/Scottish Trad

BlueChip TAD40 on all, Elixir medium strings on most but I also recently love the GHS Pure Nickel Mandolin, .011 ‑ .041, N270 set - lovely warm sound on the lower half of the courses.
