Re: Has COVID affected your MAS?

The start of the lockdowns and being stuck around the house with a newborn kicked off my desire to finally learn the mandolin. Four mandolins in less than 2 years, Iíd say it didnít affect my MAS as...

Re: Thomastiks on a Northfield Calhoun?

This is something Iíve been considering trying for awhile. Itís such a different sounding mandolin that itís fun to play around with strings outside of pbís. Looking forward to hearing your results!

Re: To be or not to be (a bluegrass player)

No. I listen to a lot of bluegrass but I donít particularly love playing it on the mandolin
  5. Learning by ear mental mapping note names

I primarily learn tunes by ear as I find it is the best and quickest way for me to truly commit a song to memory.

Lately Iíve been thinking of taking it a step further and saying the names of...

    Reproduction Gibson Tailpiece Cover

My 24 A is missing the tailpiece cover, and since I naturally play with my right forearm over the tailpiece, it makes it somewhat uncomfortable with the sharp edges exposed. Does anyone make decent...
  9. Re: Tennis elbow in the picking arm - how to avoid it?

Proper ergonomics while playing, well, saved my playing! I have two young kids which means carrying them a lot. This strain combined with holding the mandolin at too steep of an angle (headstock...

Re: vMAS - new mandolin day

It sure is! A LOT of mando for the money. Yes, the sound sample Dan made of the mandolin (as the shop was closing no less) was extremely impressive. I asked him what the time was he was picking and...
  11. Re: What chronic illnesses do old carved mandolins get?

A few that I encountered/looked out for when searching for my Ď24:
    - major cracks in the top
    - top sinkage
    - back separation
    - warped necks (pre-truss rod models)

    Most of these are correctable...

    vMAS - new mandolin day

MAS never stays at bay long for me, so Monday was a NMD for me. This time it was vintage MAS - a very clean Ď24 Gibson A that the good folks at TME had. Huge thanks to Dan for all the help...

At quick glance it looks like the Eastman offerings are around a $100 more now. Ouch indeed

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

I really like the XT custom mediums personally. Seem to give my F5 the best sound out of the other PBs Iíve tried. I like the feel as well

    Re: A case humidifier question

Oasis says 4 scoops for their guitar ones but doesnít mention how many for the mandolin one. Looks like the mandolin one is advertised as holding 1/3 the water as the guitar one, so maybe a little...

Re: Northfield M, a Step Up From My KM-900?

My experience with Northfields is that the do lend themselves to a more modern, sweet tone with plenty of punch and ďbonesĒ in the notes. Their build quality is also top notch, and as a small...

    Re: Apollo Mike Marshall picks

While I appreciate the dark tone and the weight of the pick (which feels light to me for the thickness), itís the semi rounded corners that keep sending me back to my CT55

Re: Curt Mangan Strings - Wonderful

I wonder if I got a bad set, but I tried out the CM Monel Mediums on my F5 and they sounded quite anemic to my ears - especially the E strings. Played them for about and hour and took them off.
  24. Re: Mando wall hanger at Paulís Coffee and Tea in CO

If you find yourself in Boulder, Ozo pulls a dang ;) good espresso and has a great selection of nondairy milks. But no mandolins on the wall to my knowledge

    Re: Apollo Mike Marshall picks

Iíve been playing the heck out of mine since it came last week. I think it brings out a woody, percussive bottom end to my Northfield F5 that I am really enjoying - maybe darker, more soulful type...
