In my experience, no more than three.
It keeps thing fresh to rotate between them but it's not so many that you lose interest or begin forgetting which verse goes with which piece.

I do seem to plateau a bunch anymore but I just keep playing and every once in a while , BINGO, something clicks.
I think it's just a game of persistence.
For me it's late afternoon around 4pm then after dinner till about 7 or so.
Those are my "golden" hours for playing.
Generally, what ever position your hands feel best.
That said, when I'm playing guitar or mandolin my hand is touching noting but the pick. It allows me to
float over the strings a bit better and...

After that huge meal, I'm gonna drag out "Gracie" and play a little.
