Re: Not your average cigar box mandolin

They are still here actually Charles.
  2. Re: Collings Tailpiece Strap-button Removal

I'm reluctant to say this but I use a set of opened needle nose pliers with padded jaws as a pry bar and a small piece of wood as a fulcrum to remove them. You don't clamp down on the endpin you lift...

    Re: Stew-mac prices

Amazon doesn't upcharge that, Stewmac adds their shipping charges into their products they sell on Amazon and on eBay.
  4. Re: Breedlove mandolins - no on-line catalog?

Well, it appears we have more than one member that works for TOH. Thanks Ryan.
  5. Re: Collings Tailpiece Strap-button Removal

Should be a simple press in fit. It shouldn't be glued. It should be a tapered end pin. It shouldn't be attached to the tailpiece, it's pressed into the body through the tailpiece.

    Also being discussed here.
  8. Re: Breedlove mandolins - no on-line catalog?

Breedlove is now owned by a company named Two Old Hippies. Two Old Hippies also owns Weber as well. I have no idea if Breedlove has continued to offer mandolins but I would think that the company...
  9. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

Historically the seller appears to be heavily into selling Saxophone mouthpieces.
  10. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

Find a company that does restorations after a house fire and have them give the case an ozone treatment. You can also get it done at a hockey rink. It will solve the case stink problem.
  11. Re: Aesthetic Question for Builders (and Buyers)

I'm a boring traditionalist myself. I don't know why, I just like what I like.
  12. An interview with the last Gibson Gal - NMC

Nice interview. You find out that the mystical Gibson factory was just your everyday sweatshop :)

Re: Bowl Back Mandolin needing some TLC

I'll note that the inside of Willie Nelson's famous guitar Trigger is covered with epoxy that his guitar guy uses to keep it in one piece. Good luck with it :)

    Re: Best brand for upgrade

If I was presented with those options I'd be looking at the Eastman, Kentucky, and Loar and I'd be looking at the A style models.

Or, you could have a ham sandwich.

Re: Bowl Back Mandolin needing some TLC

It appears the binding is rotting. Monetary value-wise the repair might cost more than the mandolin is worth. If it's a family heirloom then the cost might not be an issue. You're going to need an...

Re: Has Waverly Jumped the Shark?

I have Waverly tuners on two mandolins and two guitars and a banjo. All are fine. If there is something wrong with the tuners Stewmac will replace them.

You might want to check if they are easy...
  21. Re: Sticky Handel Tuners on a 1915 Gibson F4

You mentioned the late Paul Hostetter's tuner maintenance page and that is the first place I'd start. I'm sure the folks at Gryphon would be happy to get them turning for you as well. Paul was a Cafe...

    Re: Info on this Mandolin

Circa 1900, most likely built in Chicago, the tailpiece was a standard item sold by jobbers and this has 10 strings and not 8. Probably built "for the trade" so it could be labeled with any label a...

Re: Better tone with light strings?

I actually prefer the sound of heavier strings on my Gibson but I prefer the feel and playability of lighter strings. That might be coming with my advancement in age. If it sounds better to you then...

Re: Estate sale find in Ohio -- maybe

It looks more like a 60's model Martin to me as well. Maybe they reversed the 64 with 46.
