Collings MT vs MF vs Stivers F

I had an interesting and validating experience today. I took my trusty 7-yr-old Collings MT to a local music store to compare with some other instruments - specifically a new Collings MF and a 2013...

    Re: Primetone

Same here. I get more volume from the primetone material, but it is way too bright for my taste. The Proplecs give me a more woody sound. I do have a problem with the Proplecs developing...

    Re: Favorite Doc Watson albums

Ditto "On Stage" - one of my favs. Doc and Dawg too.

Doc is my all-time musical hero. I was lucky enough to see him in concert in 2001. I will always treasure that ticket stub.

    Re: D'Andrea Pro Plec 385

I recently bought some Pro Plec 385s (from Strings By Mail) and I like the tone I get out of it a lot. I have been having my semi-annual pickfest - I bought smooth and grippy primetones in 1.3 and...

    Re: Five albums

In general (with 1 exception), my faves tend to be more modern:

    1. Manzanita. This is my desert-island album
    2. The Monroe/Doc Watson Smithsonian double CD
    3. Grisman Life of Sorrow album...

Re: 1 year of online lessons

I'm slowly working through the Peghead Nation Intermediate Bluegrass course by Sharon G. I've learned a few tunes, plus she gives some very good insider hints about playing. I'm a satisfied...

Re: Strap pin yes or no in a A-5

I had one on the Rigel I had, and loved it. I keep toying with the idea of putting one on my MT - I really don't like the attach-to-the-headstock method I'm using now. On the Rigel, it was on the...

    Re: Collings Tuners?

Collings also arranged to have StewMac send me new tuners. The ones on my MT were stiff/tight ever since I bought the instrument new, and they started getting worse. I was on the verge of buying...

Re: A deal on a Kentucky Km 272

That's a good price. I bought mine used from a cafe member for $300, but it originated at the mandolin store and came with a great setup. I was very surprised at the playability!

I crunched the tuner when i closed my case. The tuner part works fine, but I broke the clip. Anyone happen to have a broken one with a good clip they would be willing to part with? I really...

This. Practice over and over until the progression is as comfortable as the melody. And, as Mark points out, it is always good to know what chord you are playing over if you want to make up some...

Re: Collings MT with New McClung

Nice. I have the honey amber gloss top version (also with a Lakota strap) that I bought new as a 50th Bday present for myself. I play the heck out of it!

Wow Linda R's voice always just reaches right inside and grabs me. It's sad that Parkinsons took away her singing voice.

Re: Went to my first Blue Grass jam

Chopping the offbeat with the mandolin while singing the onbeat is very challenging to get the hang of. I don't sing lead on many songs in my band, but those that I do I have to do a lot of rhythm...

Re: Best way to polish picks?

Brilliant! Now why didn't I think of that? My wife has great nails and she had a plethora of of choices. The 4-sided foam with the 3 different abrasions did the trick! Thank you all!
