    Re: Tremolo Notation

Thanks David. I've been puzzling over this as I've been learning to read Italian mandolin music. For example, a whole note would always be tremolo unless marked as "senza trem"? Or a quarter note...

Re: Sarah Jarosz on SNL this Saturday

I'm reviving this thread because I think Sara Jarosz was in the band on SNL last night. Did anyone else notice? Am I correct? Looks like she was playing an octave and back up singing. I have to admit...

I would add this link to the playing of one of the Italian American mandolin masters Matteo Casserino, originally from Sicily. He played in various cafes in San Francisco in the 1970s through the...

    Re: Go Deeper, Not Wider

I agree with the concept, and it’s one I struggle with. There is so much access with the internet to EVERYTHING! It’s difficult for me to settle down and dig in. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for posting! This is one of my favorite bands of all time! I tried to track down any surviving family members of the Mandolin player Bill Kleppinger but was completely unsuccessful. I would...
  9. Re: Other primitive, raw mandolin music like early Bill Monroe?

I would add to the list of pickers you need to listen to for raw power Frank Wakefield. His output varied in quality over the years, but his best work is second to none. His work with Red Allen is...

Re: Italian Mandolin music being forgotten ???

Here in San Francisco there used to be an Italian mandolin culture that started with the mandolin orchestras dating perhaps as far back as the 1890s. We still have the wonderful Aurora Mandolin...

I found this conversation to be very interesting. As a teacher in my day job, I have come to learn that everyone has different ways they learn best. Whether it's breaking a tune into chunks, or...

Re: I don't like the sound of tremolo.

I agree. I've taken enough workshops with Mike Compton to know that he would consider the technique used in Rawhide to be tremolo. Certainly not Italian style tremolo.

Re: Grisman's impact only as a mandolinist

I'll pile on to the concensus here. YES! Listen to the CD Early Dawg. Even though it has some of his originals, his playing on the bluegraas standards is original, though steeped in traditional...

I agree it gets easier the more you work at it. One thing that helps me is to listen over and over to the tune until it's stuck in my head and I can hum it without effort (I call this the...
