    Re: Phoenix Neoclassical mandolin

Yeah, I was really sad to hear they'd closed up shop. I have #593 from 2013 and it's a gorgeous instrument, MUCH too good for me, but it's a treasure. Picked it up at Gryphon - it plays incredibly...

    Re: Blue Chip meltdown

Interesting, maybe I should compare them a bit more, now I'm curious. I will say the label has worn off my main Dunlop where it didn't on the BC, but that's of little concern to me! I should inspect...

    Re: Blue Chip meltdown

I am not a very good player, but when I switched from the random picks I'd gotten at Gryphon to a BlueChip CT 55, I could IMMEDIATELY see why these were renowned. Amazing, just felt right in every...

Thanks, Jim, I appreciate you listening!
  6. Re: Feedback please: Menuet 3 by G.P.Telemann (arr. by John Goodi

So I probably won't post again with this "series", I don't want to clutter this part of the forum up too much, but I did end up recording the octave part today, which is here separately (and I'd love...
  7. Feedback please: Menuet 3 by G.P.Telemann (arr. by John Goodin)

Hey all, I finally got back around to working on Telemann pieces and I recorded the top part with the mandolin for "Menuet 3" in A Minor and I'll work on the Octave either tonight or tomorrow,...
  8. Re: Menuet 2 by G.P.Telemann (arranged by John Goodin)

    Thanks for the encouragement, Mike!
  9. Re: Menuet 2 by G.P.Telemann (arranged by John Goodin)

    Thanks! I'm on to number 3. :)
  10. Re: Menuet 2 by G.P.Telemann (arranged by John Goodin)

Sped it up a bit, a LITTLE more confident on the octave and did video form ...

Not very good, but I'm hoping to do a "diary" of progress as I learn...
  11. Menuet 2 by G.P.Telemann (arranged by John Goodin)

So, I've picked back up my mandolins in the last few weeks and am brushing up on fiddle tunes and have decided to work through John Goodin's transcriptions of G.P. Telemann's "Sept fois sept et un...

    Re: Phoenix mandolins closing shop?

Wow, just catching up on this. Sad to hear, my Phoenix Neoclassical is an amazing instrument and now I feel even more lucky to have it.
  13. Re: Weber no longer producing octave Gallatins.

DHopkins, is yours 22" scale, I'm guessing? Says he does other ones, but... if it's not his standard size, I'm nervous.
  14. Weber no longer producing octave Gallatins.

I own a beautiful (I think) Weber Gallatin octave mandolin (22" scale). (Pictured below with my Phoenix Neoclassical.)

Recently, I was thinking about trying to sell or trade it to find a 20"...
  15. Re: Action too high or am I just playing badly?

    Thanks for the feedback, everyone!
  16. Re: Action too high or am I just playing badly?

Well, to be fair I was playing a bit harder than I normally would so that the mic would pick up the buzz, but even when just strumming at a reasonable volume, the buzz persists.

    My daughter...
  17. Re: Action too high or am I just playing badly?

Hmm, OK. Well that makes me feel a little less sheepish about heading down there.

It's a 22" OM (which, honestly, I wish I'd gone 20" because it's a bit much for my pathetic noodle fingers) and I...
  18. Re: Action too high or am I just playing badly?

I'm going to. I just don't want to go down there and do one if I'm just playing too hard or wrong on the instrument. (><) Trying to avoid embarrassment.
  19. Action too high or am I just playing badly?

So, I have a Weber Octave mandolin from 2014. I was going to change my strings as they're kind of old, now, but I also have a buzz when I play.

    Re: capo on an octave

Yeah, but turning it into a Mandola is a specific purpose, I just feel like it's kind of a handicap to capo it for easier playing and I might as well see if I can stretch my fingers with practice and...

    Re: capo on an octave

I'm so tempted to do this with my Weber A style, but I feel like it will be admitting I can't handle the Octave I bought, hah. I do get better tone capo'ed up 2 strings, but I might be fine with just...

    Road to Monalea Chords?

So, I've been neglecting my playing but I started playing again today after a big break.

I wanted to play Road to Monalea (http://www.folktunefinder.com/tunes/41249) but it seems a bit thin with...

Re: What is this notation exactly?

I mean, there is music with the book so maybe you'd be able to hear what the notation is, but it's played at speed so even when I slow it down it's hard to 100% tell the difference between a grace...
