Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

The only excuse for hanging a mandolin is if it participated in a Killer solo! In North Carolina, a capital crime is punishable by lethal injection, and sometimes what I play could be considered a...
  3. Re: How did you feel about your new build Mando?

If you are interested in something other than the traditional, I recommend Sorensen Mandolins - Steve is a great guy to work with and has worked with me from the begging to the end. The thing is,...

Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

In my neck of the woods, most people keep a beater out in the open on a stand, so that when the B&E occurs, they don't take the time to search out the good ones!

    Re: Ellis A5?

I agree with the "hop a Southwest junket" approach or have it shipped and play it in the privacy of your home with a 48 hr approval. A guitar show is no place to audition any acoustic instrument,...

    Re: Ellis A5?

Old Growth: they are all very close. The 1990s Nugget has a better low end and excels at swing chord voicings. Very even across the strings & up the neck. Don Stierbeg's nugget and mine sound...

    Re: Ellis A5?

I have been fortunate enough to have chased down & caught a few great mandolins. I let a very good Collings MT2 go to pick up an X-braced F5 Duff. An Ellis A5 wormed it's way into the herd and...

    Re: Leon Redbone - RIP

A "unique voice". Loved his music. The world was better for introducing some of us to the great American treasure trove of songs.
  9. Re: New Apitius Club Jazz Mandolin acquisition…

I love the whole vibe of that mandolin. Visually flows together. Not as ostentatious as an 5F, but sensuous in its curves. Bet you're not taking it to a lot of Bluegrass jams!
  10. Re: New Chord melody...with special Guests!

Great job! Maybe the next should be the theme song of the repentant shepherd: "There will never be another Ewe"

Re: Is this harmful to the Mandolin?

The latest rage in themed bars down here is axe or hatchet throwing (as opposed to darts). North Carolina doesn't even have the Paul Bunyan heritage. What could possibly fo wrong!:disbelief:

    Re: Neck length

Also, don't confuse neck length with scale length. Your Od Wave has the same scale length (nut to saddle) as an F-5 at 13 7/8", despite joining the body at about the 12th fret rather than the 15th. ...
  13. Re: Slight frustration when changing mandolin strings

This thread reminds me that it is time to change the strings on all 3 of my mandolins!

  18. Re: Jams / shows / Meetups in Chicago, Columbus OH, & San Antonio

While in Chicago check out where & when Don Stiernberg is playing. The Fume Gypsy Project has a very innovative rhythm section based around his mandolin, and the DS trio is fantastic.
  19. Re: Pricing increases to Collings and Waterloo Instruments

Their vintage-style cases were so sweet. Probably NOT cost-effective to build. Too bad!

  25. Upgrade pickup on Mandocaster Re-issue?

With Moongazer out of business (RIP), who makes a drop-in replacement pick up for the Fender Mandocaster re-issue. I'm getting tired of the puny E string. Any suggestions?
