    Enjoy! Don builds exceptional mandolins.
  2. Re: Anyone Know where I can find a used Gilchrist

You have a saddle for an instrument holder? Year and voicing on the RD?

    Re: Strap button on neck?

If your left hand technique is correct, you won't notice the button in daily play. If you regularly play above the 15th fret, you might notice it.

Re: Why no narrow nut options?

I have an old left hand injury, so nut width and neck shape are critical to my ability to play at all. Before the injury, I could play most mandolins with no problem. Now, the wrong neck will set off...

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

Get the TC Electronics Unitune, or the Polytune if you have a guitar also. I've been through a bunch of tuners, and it's the best one I've found. Accurate (especially in strobe mode), battery lasts a...

    Re: Statman Fretboard Journal

Andy's playing is so unencumbered by any technical limitation and so beyond what anyone else can do with improvisation. He's definitely one of the best ever. Nice to read about his Monroe roots.

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

Can you point me to the scientific evidence that shows instruments don't change over time? I'm not aware of it.

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

While it doesn't reach the level of scientific evidence, go watch Jill's tune a week thread. First video is the mandolin at brand new. We will eventually have 52 consecutive videos one week apart to...

    Re: Mandolin Try-out Etiquette

I like hearing my mandolins from the other side in the hands of good players so I'm glad to offer my mandolin to most people. The only person I've turned down was obviously inebriated. It was at a...

    Re: Torrified wood

IIRC, in an interview I read Don Macrostie noted that light didn't pass through the spruce tops on vintage guitars. He noted that light doesn't pass through torrified spruce either. He didn't draw...

    Re: Musical contests

It's also good discipline for the contestants. Can you come up with creative variations for a number of tunes? Can you play all the difficult parts cleanly? Can you play them with enough speed and...

I'll second everything Pat said about the Passernig mandolins. I enjoy my Passernig A5. Way better than the price.
  15. UK Music Lovers: Reischman UK Tour May 1-12

Don't miss this, mandolin players in the UK. I just saw John Reischman and the Jaybirds and they are an incredible band. John's playing just knocks me out. Tone taste timing. You'll enjoy their new...

    Re: Northfield Airloom Recurve review

I'm not a fan of the lid flopping all the way open. I'd prefer better quality latches, but never had a problem with them. They just feel sketchy. Other than that, it's a good case.

EMD certainly stresses my left hand, especially bouncing off the open D string on the A part.

    Re: Strap locks.

The end pin coming out won't be helped by a strap lock. A small loop of string/leather around the tailpiece attached to the strap is more important to me than a strap lock.
