One way to know what they sound like - listen to any mandolin recording by Dan Tyminski and any recent work by David Benedict. They’re both die hard supporters. There are also a number of recording...

    Re: Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper

Mike has perfect pitch - he can tell you what note you’re playing, fretted or not, on any instrument (even non bluegrass, non strung.) So that’s why it’s easier for him to just jump in than to mess...

Re: How do you get better at the mandolin?

This is SO important. David Grisman told me exactly the same thing on two occasions about being structured with your practice time.

Re: How do you get better at the mandolin?

After almost 30 years of doing this, and finally figuring out how it most often seems to work for player development, here’s the best advice I can give:

    Re: The Seat Belt Chop

Yep, I’ve had issues....still do....got a nice wool coat for professional dress when going to work (corporate), and recently noticed a rough patch where I “ghost pick” along with tunes in the car.

    Hey All -
Spoke to Tyler White recently since I hadn’t heard much from him in awhile. He’s been consumed with the Mandola build, which has taken him a tremendous amount of time (and kept him away...

  18. Re: Why did you choose the mandolin over another instrument?

For me it was to get girls. Everybody knows that chicks can't resist a mandolin picker. After more than 20 years....well, I'm sure the ladies will be calling me any day now.

No doubt the radius option works for some and not for others. Just wondering if the OP had considered this as a solution.

    Radius fretboard? Wider nut?
Maybe re-evaluate how your posture is when you’re playing?
