    Re: New Fender 1.5mm pick

Yes. I didn't like the feel of the Tru-shell pick in my fingers (slick) or how it felt on the string (not so slick) and a little more pick noise than my BC or Radex. YMMV

    Re: Who makes custom strings?

I don't know what Mapes will really do for you, but I know that when I was ordering custom gauged octave mando strings a while back, I forgot to specify whether I wanted wound or plain treble...

I shouldn't have bought those new super-special picks last week either. But it was fun!

    Re: Waverly tuners

    Very Cool.

Please excuse me while I make note (for future reference) that for the tuners to turn in the "correct" direction, the worm grooves must point:

to the North East for worm over tuners...
  9. Re: Strange intonation issue with new strings

    Thomastik A strings are wound.

IF intonation was fine with TIs, why would you suspect nut or saddle? Change the strings.

  11. Re: Strange intonation issue with new strings

Are the Optima A strings wound? (not that that would necessarily make a difference)

Re: How Much Better Does It Get

I'd expect the setup to be pretty good coming from TMS.

Being new to an instrument with 2 string courses and shorter scale length often makes a newcomer to mandolin find that it is harder to fret...

Re: How Much Better Does It Get

The usual recommendation is to PM cafe member Rob Meldrum and he will send you a setup guide for free. Lots of good reviews on here about it.
You could then check yourself on how good the setup is....

    Anyone here going to NashCamp?

My first time at NashCamp. Just wondered if I'll meet any folks whose posts I've been reading over the years.:)
  15. Re: Newbie question: Mandolin for other instrumentals

As usual, putnamm, I think folks are making things much more complicated than the question asked.

Songs and tunes are accompanied by a series of chords that fit the melody. The chords are...

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I go to 2 or 3 jams per week and they all are pretty much based on Bluegrass, Bluegrass Gospel, and Old Country.

Now that I've learned all 5 songs and all 4 tunes, I'm all set. Sometimes folks...

    Re: Jerusalem Ridge

Most everybody I've discussed JR with during the past decade has considered it a 4 part tune. "Bona fide" to you or not.

It might sometimes be easier to have a discussion of a thread not many...
  19. Re: Source for Custom hand-braided mandolin straps

Depends on your custom design. About $15 per woven knot plus the strap which will be about $75-100 depending on material (roo vs other) and which style braid. So roughly from about $120 to twice...
  20. Source for Custom hand-braided mandolin straps

Many months ago, there was a discussion about high-end decorative mandolin straps made in the style of braided leather tack, beautifully hand made stuff. One café member at that time was personally...

    Re: Go To Jams Now!

If your jams only require that you just follow chords as others play melody or sing, all that is necessary is to memorize ONE 3-string chord shape (movable) and 2 one-four- five chord patterns on the...

    Re: Explain This Chord

I doubt that anyone suggested 'split strings'. More likely just describing a way to play a one finger A chord.

    Re: Explain This Chord

If the courses are close enough to each other and your fingertip is big enough, it works. Otherwise, not so much.;) (It's not so much "between' as 'on top of'.)
