Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

I contacted the seller and he said he was aware that the price was high but still has not changed it. Hope springs eternal! :)

Re: Has Waverly Jumped the Shark?

I have Waverlys on my Campanella but I don’t recall any problems with stiffness. I will check to see but I do guess that, as Peter and others have said, that the problem might be in the installation....
  3. Re: Aesthetic Question for Builders (and Buyers)

I don’t like those finished either but I only see the ones you describe on the lower end instruments. True sunbursts are much more complicated than two colors. I think the finishes con the best of...

    Re: CMSA Virtual Mini-Conference

Wow! I never heard about this. Sounds great. I have been to a few of the big conventions held near to me but could never afford to fly across the country to go to others. I may try for the November...

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I did bulk download of all the files. It seems like some don't load at all (links dead). Still lots to explore. The "OTHERS" page gives an error message. Maybe they have not completely uploaded all...

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I have been using Acrobat and searched for tremolo and it gave me no results. Maybe my version is too old and the newer ones work better? Give me an example of a word you successfully searched for...
  7. Re: Sticky Handel Tuners on a 1915 Gibson F4

I have heard over the years (possibly from Paul H) that 3-in-1 Oil is not ideal for tuner lubrication since there are particles of graphite(?) or something else suspended in the oil and that, as John...

    Re: the Nakano Collection

Yes, those were from the FMI site supplied by Calace family. Were you able to search for words? I couldn’t.
  9. Re: Mandolin Archive - Lloyd Loar signed L5 Guitar 77394

I had to settle for a late 20s L-5. Frankly I love mine and it fulfilled hero worship twice: Eddie Lang and Mother Maybelle. Good enough for me.

I do believe that the Loar L-5s sell for less than...

Re: Estate sale find in Ohio -- maybe

I think I saw a rectangular case behind that Yosemite Sam box in the closet. Could be that closet Loar F-5. :)

I wonder why they didn't show the mandolin, or did I just miss it?

    Re: Automation replacing mandolins?

I enjoy seeing and hearing these old orchestrions and the like. There are quite a few at the MOMI in Phoenix, AZ—I remember more than a roomful. Also, there is a museum of coin-operated machine at...

    Re: the Nakano Collection

A wonderful find, for sure and it is exciting that they have additional pieces scanned but I figure I will take the time to download everything I can before it disappears again. It will take me...

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I am just curious where you found this book. I don't see it on the Calace listings nor in the index file. Unless you found it at the link to free-scores.com: Metodo per Mandolino. That was actually...

    Re: Old vs New Oval

I love the understated look and the sound files sound quite nice, too. Here’s the link.

    Re: the Nakano Collection

I don’t know if it is the same but you can buy a modern edition of the Calace method. I will have to re-enter and explore this new Nakano site.

  17. Re: What Are Some Favorites In Your Collection?

Someone else asked me recently about this book and a friend dug deep and found that it was reprinted and is available here, sold by the Old Town School of Folk Music. The website for the book remains...

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Style A4

I was thinking that most dealers would opt for offering a consignment arrangement rather than buying outright unless it was a collection of significant instruments or some that conform to their...
  22. Re: Mysterious Alabama Octave Mandolin (No Lable)

I would imagine that there are quite a few Chinese instrument factories that supply import instruments for branding. Same with violins. My violin guy here told me that he shopped around to find a...

  24. Re: Mysterious Alabama Octave Mandolin (No Lable)

I wonder if the Alabama and older Gold Tone with the pick-shaped soundhole might be made by the same Chinese(?) Shop?
  25. Re: Mysterious Alabama Octave Mandolin (No Lable)

Looks like an import from Asia. Here's a 10 year old thread. I think the brand is mostly sold in Canada.
