  1. "Elderlys" (To Be or Not To Be Confused With Elderly)

I was surfing for information on the Kentucky KM-855 Artist when a link to a sale site called ELDERLYS, not to be (more likely TO be) confused with Elderly popped up. ELDERLYS lists a whole slew of...

Re: Northfield Tone: NF-F5S vs Big Mon

I realize this thread has been dormant for five+ years, but in case the following observation might prove helpful to some future explorer who stumbles across it ... I think there's a middle ground...

Re: 2-point Orpheum branded Strad-O-lin on eBay

I guarantee you adding bushings and lubing the tuners on mine would not have helped at all. The holes were drilled at bizarre angles. I thought I had posted "before" photos but I can't find them....

Re: 2-point Orpheum branded Strad-O-lin on eBay

The only issue was that the tuners were incredibly tight. I had to use a string winder to get every string up to pitch.(I'm guessing that's why the seller didn't restring it initially.) It played...

    Re: Eastman/K&K Tailpiece Changeout

My digital caliper says the Eastman is .071" thick and an Allen is .080," a difference of .009" This is a bit of a sloppy reading with neither tailpiece dead flat against the side, but I'm thinking...

    Re: Eastman/K&K Tailpiece Changeout

Thank you, Berto Boy. I was thinking more in terms of a round tapered file for enlarging the hole. There's no way I'm going to do an operation like that on my drill press unless I'm wearing chain...

    Re: Eastman/K&K Tailpiece Changeout

Thank you, ProfChris. So, does the nut tighten down against the tailpiece, or does the tailpiece fit over it? (I'm assuming the former, or it wouldn't have to be loosened.) And would I be correct in...

    Eastman/K&K Tailpiece Changeout

I recently acquired a 2016 Eastman 605, one of their models with a factory-installed K&K pickup. I don't care for Eastman tailpieces and have swapped out a half dozen for Allens, but none involved...

Re: Will CA Help on These Stradolin Cracks?

...bookending this thread that I started ... Bob Chuckrow did a fantastic job with the Strad-O-Lin, which needed a lot more work done to it than fixing the cracks. He also leveled the fretboard and...

Re: 2-point Orpheum branded Strad-O-lin on eBay

That's the listing in which the seller said he'd removed the strings because they were rusty. He replied to me that he would string it, but either it took him a while to get around to doing that or...

It's been in a plastic storage bin with a half-dozen guitar humidifiers since it got here Weds except for when I've had it out to photograph or clean it.

Re: Will CA Help on These Stradolin Cracks?

Muchas gracias, Jim. I'm beginning the process of hunting down luthiers here (Asheville, NC and environs) that aren't backed up for years, but I'd be interested in any recommendations you and other...

Will CA Help on These Stradolin Cracks?

I just received a Strad-O-Lin purchased from a seller who claims it was built in October 1941. I thought it had one top crack but as it turns out there are two parallel cracks. I would like to string...

I understand your motivation, Steve, as I have the same instinct. And while you're correct that the name of the business is revealed in the link (and perhaps this is due to my lack of knowledge) I...

Thanks for your observation, Steve. The purpose of my post was to call attention to a Strad-O-Lin that is for sale on a site other than the usual places folks normally look (eg Cafe classifieds,...

Re: 2-point Orpheum branded Strad-O-lin on eBay

This is all very interesting to an old guy with a more contemporary sensibility. For the cost and time it takes to install four tiny screws, you'd rather have customers think this was a manufacturing...

So, you're saying that this mandolin would have been released from the factory without all the tuner mounting screws having been installed?

Re: 2-point Orpheum branded Strad-O-lin on eBay

Not sure this is the best place to post this link, but since the topic has strayed from the original 2-point instrument, here is a Strad-O-Lin for sale at an instrument store in Philly in case...
  21. Re: Mother of Pearl Buttons for New Gotoh F tuners

I'm not sure I agree, Mike, but rather than hijack the thread I'll leave it here. I'm not going to call out the buttons as fakes in a negative review on ebay because I can't prove that they are and...
  22. Re: Mother of Pearl Buttons for New Gotoh F tuners

Doesn't Gotoh have a responsibility to step up to the plate and complain to ebay? I'll leave feedback for r.haus that reflects the specifics I outlined in my post, but by remaining silent Gotoh is...
  23. Re: Mother of Pearl Buttons for New Gotoh F tuners

Picking up on Mike Edgerton's earlier posts to this thread, I just purchased a set of buttons on ebay that the seller, "r.haus" described as take-offs from Gotoh MF40-N-MP tuners. At this writing, he...

    Re: Eastman Opaque Finishes Question

This is essentially the crux of my question. The gold paint+metal flake is thick enough that I can't see the wood grain through it, and then there's that clearcoat, so I think it's very possible that...

    Re: Eastman Opaque Finishes Question

All due respect, I wasn't asking three or four questions but rather asking for practical experience with Eastman finishes. It's a fine sounding mandolin and I have no reason to part with it.
