Lately I have been practicing chord scales using tremolo. For example, If I'm working on a song in G, I will warm up with G scale patterns for 10 minutes, practice the song for 10 minutes, and then...
The owner of one of Nashville's most famous acoustic instrument stores told me that no mandolin under $5,000 is going to beat a Collings MT. I used to own an MT and have played a lot of mandolins in...

I highly suggest you take a few lessons with Wayne Benson. It will save you years of frustration...
I think it in terms of scale degree, e.g. Root, 2, 3, 5, 6, etc. and shapes.
I had a Collings MT wide nut that didn't feel good in my hands so I sold it and purchased a Kimble F5. My Kimble neck has more of a v-neck feel and it's perfect for me. I did not notice any...
I'd like to purchase a 4-string, solid body electric mandolin to keep at my workplace office. I would like to be able to close my office door and work on fretboard study exercises without the person...

Do you have all of these items solidly under your fingers so you can use them on the fly to improvise on the mandolin: major scale for every key in the first position (ALL intervals across all 4...
Stop using tab and learn by ear. It's difficult at first but becomes easier and easier. Tab has it's uses, but if you can't learn by ear then tab is holding you back.
I wasted about 4 years of practice due to using only tabs. I could flatpick a lot of fiddle tunes but only the arrangements I learned from tab - most of the time I couldn't even back up other people...
You should try Wegan bluegrass picks. They are only $4/each and I like them better than my Blue Chip picks: https://www.stringsandbeyond.com/wegen-picks-bg100-white-10-mm.html
Learn the core melody notes, then play other scales, patters, arpeggios, etc. and hit a core melody note at key times so people know what song you're playing.
I think it really comes down to how many hours of practice you put in over your lifetime. :mandosmiley:
Practice with metronome and try pushing the pace everyday. Try different things with both hands, pressure, technique to find what works for you. Ultimately it will come down to how many hours you sit...
Skill on an instrument is directly related to number of hours you put in. When I played classical guitar I practiced 2-3 hours per day, but that was when I was in college. Now I try to get 1 hours...
I recommend the book, Pentatonic Mandolin by Niles H. You'll be improvising in jam breaks in no time.:mandosmiley:
I did the exact same thing a few years ago. I was not in the market for a mandolin but played every mandolin in Nashville - I ended up buying a Kimble F5 from Cotton Music a few months later!
Do you think your mandolin is junk? I have several junk instruments - an acoustic guitar and electric base, both of which I'd be fine with using them as firewood. I'd go back to the store if they...
Agree with 1ChordTrick, I recommend saving up for an American made A style mando, Weber, Gibson A9, or Collings MT. If it were me, i'd save up for the MT. Have fun :mandosmiley:
I could figure it out by ear if I had a mandolin in my lap quicker than it's taking me to write this response :mandosmiley: Have you tried to learn it by ear? It's a good skill to develop if you have...
Often times players get confused or forget out to play things when they slow them down. Jess played the wrong rhythm when it slowed it down! Just follow the up to tempo playing and you'll be fine. ~o)
When you feel the energy rise during the song. I like playing with people who I can groove with! I get bored with jams that produce no energy.~o):cow::popcorn:
