    Re: Octave Mandolin Strings

I currently am using flat wound electric guitar strings on my OM. Recognize that the plain steel strings really are about the same from brand to brand and style to style - the E strings from a...

    Re: Octave Mandolin Strings

I have a 21" F4 OM with an Allen tailpiece that takes ball end strings. I use guitar strings, I buy them as singles from my local music store:
    G - .048"
    D - .040"
    A - .024" (wound)
    E - .013"

    Re: Mandocello Amplifier Thoughts

If an acoustic amp (like my Carvin) has a high impedance (HI Z) input, no preamp or DI is needed. I have a RedEye but I only use it when plugging into a system with low impedance input.

I've shared this story before, but its been a while. I picked up mandolin completely by accident.

    Re: Octave pairings?

I didn't know that term for it but its also how I've strung my 10 string mandola, OM and 10 string mandocello. These instruments I have all use a zero fret so the nut slots can accomodate a variety...

    Re: Octave pairings?

This is dead simple, two ways.

    1. To tune an octave higher, halve the diameter. So your octave G would be .023 and the octave D is .016.

    2. Even easier, use a spare A tuned to an octave G....

The buttons are only slightly looser when slipping over the shaft. Once the button screw is hand tight the tuners function just as before. I never epoxy anything that's meant to be removable (and...

Back to binding - I get that using wood is more difficult, thus more costly. But why not nicer colors if we are stuck with plastic? I've seen some nice tortoise shell looking binding, dark brown,...
  10. Re: What are your favorite albums featuring mandolin?

I heard the band "Milkdrive" a few years ago live at my neighborhood Thai place. They just blew me away with an awesome rock/ newgrass/jazz sound. I don't think they're together anymore, and they...

So a little more info on this old thread. A few months ago I got a hold of some Gotoh ebony buttons from Luthier's Merc and they fit the Morris F4 (square, 0.124" (~3.17 mm) across both sets of...

As I originally posted, 2021 will be our 25th maintenance and refueling outage. Half of my summer will be spent working 12 hours every day, 6 days every week. I'll miss most of the festivals.

You need to get LAME, another bit of freeware that plugs into Audacity. When I first got Audacity many years ago there was a link for LAME.
