Re: Keeping up with the Fiddlers

I share your despair and I'm not really a newbie, just not a fast player. The discipline to work on the mechanics of picking, the 'zen' of relaxing and the confidence of performing are three...

    Re: Advice on mandolin Upgrade

Used, A style. Check the classifieds on this site. But radiused fretboard and wide nut may be hard to find at that price point. Eastman or Kentucky are the brands in that price range, although I...
  6. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

I’ve only played 1 Loar, and it had a very lovely sound. Of affordable instruments, there’s a Duff and a Sullivan I lust for, although neither are for sale. I’ve played several very nice mandolins...

    Re: LRTI surgery

You've got all your ducks in a row, a great surgeon, so you just need to figure out the scheduling. At this age, if not now, when?

I wish you all the best.

    Re: Nashville Visit Advice

The National Museum of African American Music is a must see in my opinion. On Broadway across from the Roman. More music, less clothes than the Country Music HOF.

I’d also make 3rd and Lindley...

    Re: LRTI surgery

My guitar playing wife had this surgery on her right thumb in 2021. Prior to that she had extreme pain in her pick holding thumb after 15 minutes and had had steroid injections every 3 months for...
  12. Re: Overcoming halted progress and frustration

Some things don't respond to direct force. Sneaking up sometimes is a more effective strategy, ie, moderating the slope to the hill.

    Re: Gibson's 1923 F-5 Master Model Reissue

Someone's not telling the truth, either through ignorance or deception. Won't help anything to have two alternate facts in circulation.

Re: What makes strings go sharp?

I think the added deflection of the top as the strings are brought to pitch plays a role. Easy to see on the G course.

Re: Can I say tap-tuning on MC?

Use the ‘Search’ function to see the many discussions of this topic. It will reduce any flaming.

Most folks buy instruments for the sound they produce, not the construction details.

    Re: Thoughts on keys.

My take is people become familiar with the keys that are frequently used in the genre(s) they play. Most folksmusic is not done in flat keys, as horns were typically not used. Swing and jazz...

  19. Re: A customer playing a baroque mandolin I built

It looks like he's playing with a thumb pick. Is that correct, and is that typical of the period?

    Re: Demonstrating a mandolin

They think they're selling themselves rather than the instrument.

Back when dirt was new, my classical guitar teacher illustrated the resonance of instruments by playing the open strings in...
  22. Re: Daddario NBM11540 Nickel Bronze also discontinued

NB are still on the D’Addario website, in 2 gauges. And a pile here at Wintergrass at the D’Addario table. Just not the 11.5-40 set.

    Re: Technique adjustments

It’s not uncommon to have to give yourself a ‘demotion’ to fix some fairly fundamental issues. Patience is really the key here, especially if the changes contain physical changes, ie, more...

  25. Re: Could I leave mando in car in winter while skiing?

Depends. Is it a Rogue or a Gilchrist?

I wouldn't want the Mando to sleep any colder than me. Will it get lonely and perhaps go with a passing stranger? I've heard they sometimes do that.
