Don MacRostie is building some absolute killer mandolins these days. I had the chance to play one of his new “Cox” Loar F5 models recently and it’s a cannon.
Last I heard his shop was severely damaged by a windstorm.
“Music is a conversation, not a contest” so says Don Julin.
There’s a Nugget F5 that resides in Lawrence, Kansas that is amazing in all regards.
[QUOTE=Dan in NH;1933877]In this case the term specifically refers to wood that has been kiln dried i.e. torrefied.
Kiln dried i.e. torrefied? Are they the one and the same? I dunno but don’t...
Don’s torrified mandolins are amazing. Here is a fairly new video about Don:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj2xTSBhusc
A mellower sound? Please cite your sources for us. Thanks.

My cap dates back many years ago. It has witnessed many missed notes, laughter, smiles and boat loads of strong coffee and copious amounts of IPA. I think a Cafe cap with a sword bill...
Not sure what happened! Just resent another PM
Belbein: “Anything I should know before I give in to my most evil instincts?”
Yes. I sent you a PM this morning. I have some thoughts to share with you if you are sincerely looking at one of...
My Fletcher tenor is much, much woodier and complex than what that video indicates, but I play further up the neck toward the sound hole. Nice picking in the video, though! Thanks for sharing.
[QUOTE=belbein;1929518][... they seem designed to handle GDAE tuning on a 21" scale] “That wasn't my impression. I thought they were build for CGDA right out of the shop. A question I need to ask,...
“Good things happen to good people” and this is proof. Glad to hear this ended up so favorably for you, Alan.
If you or anyone you know is driving from Oregon to California I have a guitar I’d like to donate. Need to get it down to California. Send me a PM, please. If I don’t find anyone to handle the...
Now that is a lovely and powerful compliment, Lynn.
Fantastic builders like Andrew Mowry, Matt Ruhland and Austin Clark here in the Pacific Northwest assures me that we are good hands for the foreseeable future.
Prefer Lucchese boots out of El Paso. They make some fine ropers…or at least they used to. Hard to beat wearing a pair of ropers with Bermuda shorts to the old Arlington Stadium to watch the Rangers...
Nice looking Heiden’s.
You’ve got a great Heiden. Best I’ve played.
[QUOTE=sgarrity;1919399]Ive owned both and my Heiden won out. Had it for 16 years now. So much more depth and nuance to the tone. You can drive it hard or play it or play it soft and sweet and it...
Wow, I’m saddened to learn of Gavin‘s passing. He was a really cool guy. Gavin built a stellar A4 for me with the sunflower (State flower of Kansas) inlay that his widow designed based on an idea I...
My vote(s)…Butch Baldassari hands down. Hard to believe he’s been gone 14 years now. Then, John Reischman and especially when John played alongside John Miller.
Enjoy!
Here’s 259R which I bought new. It’s a dandy and such a joy to play…as it has been since day 1.
