    The joints are tapered in two planes, not parallel as with a mortise and tenon. The dovetail is not as dramatic as with guitars and mandolins but it is still a dovetail.

    I have used those bolts on a number of instruments, guitars and mandolins, they work fine. I have gone from the threaded screw inserts to an imbedded barrel nuts inside the heel.

    Yes, you do. You will have to tune the guitar an octave below mandolin tuning. You can buy individual guitar strings from a guitar store or on line. I would suggest a starting point of .040 (G) .030...

    Are you playing a tenor guitar tune CGDA? If so, playing in C should the same as playing in G on a mandolin.

    Spruce is generally used for the front for tonal reasons, unless it has "bearclaw" it has no figure. But I am one that can admire a beautiful, split, spruce and the medullary rays it can produce.
