  1. Re: Nickel Wound 2nd course (mandola and bouzouki)

A little thread necromancy but I have some new info.

I found some .017 phosphor bronze single strings at Strings and Beyond. I'm using them on the A course of my Crump B-1 and the D course on...
  2. Re: Suggestions for Online posting of musical content for payment

Patreon is a good idea. Some folks give lessons but I have a friend who basically puts it up for people who want to support his work as a musician. He does have some extras up there but it's kind...
  3. Re: Gold Tone OM-800 vs Trinity College TM 325

Since you indicated that both instruments are local, go try them out.

Either one would probably be a decent starter octave but, as Multidon points out, there are different versions of TCs and Gold...

    Re: Mandolin or Octave Mandolin

I'll offer a different perspective. Octave or bouzouki work just fine with guitar. Play the instrument you're drawn to.

If your plan is to mostly strum first position chords, then it's true...
  5. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

If you want to indulge your inner hobbit and go for one of the flat top mandolas, I would highly recommend Davy Stuart. The price range on his website is in NZ dollars and the exchange rate is...

Not sure if Kyle has left the building but:
Are XTs like Ejs that stay in tune better and last longer or are they designed to have different tonal qualities?

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

How do the XTs differ from the EJ and EXP series given that all three are phosphor bronze. They seem like a straight upgrade or is there some reason to still go with the EJs?

I got this Davy Stuart mandola last year. It's an 18 inch scale and has a bit bigger body. I love it. I use it on Celtic but also old time, Americana, and gospel.

    I've taken to tuning...

  13. Re: Loudness with Chris Thile CT 55 Bluechip pick?

I will say that Wegens give very good volume. I haven't found a pick that has as much headroom and still sounds nice. I'm using Wegens on everything right now. Not sure if that will hold true 8...
  14. Re: Loudness with Chris Thile CT 55 Bluechip pick?

Isn't that true. I cringe a bit when I look back at my "never gonna sell this mando/octave/bouzouki" that is long gone.

    Re: 18" scale mandola/tenor leads

Davy Stuart makes an 18" scale mandola. I have one and highly recommend it. I have mine tuned CGDG and play it like a mini-bouzouki that I can pick a quick melody on as well.

    I've never tried...

    Re: Octave sound diffence?

    Yes.
From what I've figured out there are a number of factors that move an octave more towards a mandolin or a guitar.

Arch top, floating bridge, Teardrop (or F) style body tend to lean towards a...

Re: Best Bluegrass Band Single Microphone?

Well that's $2500 in mics compared to the 600 for the Ear Trumpet. It should sound better! To make a valid comparison you would need to hear the 414 alone compared to the ET. Even then the 414 is...

Re: Post A picture of your favorite "A" model

I really wanted this one. The look and the sound are exactly what I want. It's an MT2 I think although the video says it's an MT. No funds, so no mando but I'll always remember this one....

    Re: Matsikas Zouks

I have a bowl front so it doesn't combine with the bowl back very well. Flat back works better for...
