  1. Re: ISO Recs for Bluegrass Mandolins in the $900-1.2K rang

You can occasionally find a Gibson A9 in your range that would suit your needs.
  2. Re: Converting Trinity College OM to lefty?

I’d be more inclined to buy something that is already set up for a lefty:

Re: PEEK Pick by EML Picks

It’s going to be hard for someone else to determine what is going to work for you as tastes vary. Size is important, but so are material, shape, and bevel. I really like the Wegen TF140 but find the...

Re: PEEK Pick by EML Picks

For your goals, I would recommend the PEEK. Not only does casein produce a darker tone to my ears, but it is available from a number of manufacturers (like Red Bear). Eric is the only commercial...
  5. Re: Mandolin players who bought or have played a Waterloo Mandoli

The one-piece design was my least favorite part of a Flatiron 1N and a pair of Redline Travelers that I previously owned. When I commissioned my Alrite Tribute from Andy Poe, I insisted on a vintage...

I really enjoyed this collection, Don. I admired the creative takes on familiar tunes, like The Big Scioty, and I would be proud to have written the original ones, particularly Red Mesa Waltz. But my...

Re: What is this wood figuring called?

That theme might tell us something about the attention to detail that Adrian and crew are paying to the quality of the wood they are sourcing (and pretty much every other aspect of production).

Re: NMD Sawchyn Hobo Flat top

I find the blurb interesting: “As compared to a Beavertail, the Hobo has a darker, deeper, warmer, and slightly lo-fi tone. It’s a fun solo instrument, with less projection and horsepower, but more...

    Re: Flatiron N1 vs K2

I would expect the 1N to be a bit brighter due to the maple back, the 2K to be a bit warmer because of the koa, and the latter to be a higher (2) trim level aesthetically with binding.

Re: Would you sacrifice tone for playability?

If the answer is framed generally about instruments, I’d say yes. Playability features such as neck profile, nut width, and fretboard radius are difficult/expensive to modify and a challenge for me...
