    Re: Old Mandolin Restorer's Dilemma

I'm not sure I could call that too much of a GOOD thing :)

Re: Is this a real Larson?

Almost everyone made a similar model (well, except Gibson) but I'm with Nick on this one, it looks like a Harmony to me.

    Re: Confusing Gibson Flatiron

They put that label on every mandolin they built around that time.

OK, I just re-read that. It says it's an A5 and it's an F body?

    Re: Orpheum Mandolin circa 1930s?

This is a Strad-O-Lin genre mandolin. I've owned two that were branded Orpheum but not all Orpheum branded mandolins were made by the company that made this one. Can you post a picture of the tuners...

    Re: bohman mandolins

I've always thought of Bohmann as the worlds greatest musical instrument manufacturer, as did he.

    Re: Damage to Loar A5???

It's probably the second most valuable Loar as you can't buy the first. Every time this comes up I get a serious case of MAS for a Ms. Griffith copy.

    Re: 1930's SS Stewart Mandolin

I actually talked with the owner of this mandolin for a while on the phone last week. There were no date codes or model numbers inside. I pegged it as probably a Harmony before I saw it. He had taken...
  8. Re: "New techniques" for instrument restoration (NMC)

Has anyone told Willie Nelson about this process?
  9. Re: "New techniques" for instrument restoration (NMC)

I think I would have used lasagna to patch it. Maybe not.

    Re: 1930's SS Stewart Mandolin

On a really good day with all of the planets aligned and you find the one person that has to have it. That's a pretty generous price.

    Re: Damage to Loar A5???

This thread has a whole lot of images of the mandolin in question. You have to scan through it to find them. Here are some older images of the treble side. That spot looks to visible in that shot of...

    Re: 1930's SS Stewart Mandolin

Hi Patti, I wasn't able to reply to your e-mail because it said your mailbox was unavailable. It is indeed a harmony built product.

    Pre 1900 SS Stewart Publications

While looking for something else I ran across this page. Some history. More mandolin content towards 1900.

    That doesn't surprise me.
  17. Re: Gibson Master Model A9 vs Vintage Gibson A9 (1930s)

As much as I like old Gibson mandolins this is like comparing apples to oranges. I'd be all over the A9 assuming it wasn't damaged.
  18. Re: Import Flatiron Festival vs Eastman MD515

While I'm sure that there are folks that love their imported Flatirons they've never been touted as great instruments.
  19. Re: Gibson Master Model A9 vs Vintage Gibson A9 (1930s)

    I've never seen a 30's A9, could you post a picture?

Nigel, do you know if it made it to the states or does it just disappear after being shipped?

Re: Counting Tree Growth Lines ?

Without the whole log or at least a known half of the log you wouldn't have all the rings to count.

    Re: To A Higher Standard

There is something to be said about being able to play it the way it was written even if it sounds awful. There's a story about the late Tommy Tedesco sitting in a recording session and when it all...
